Presgraves, Forester finish well, Royal golf fourth at state

BELLINGHAM — Behind a pair of top-15 finishes from Alyssa Presgraves and Shelby Forester, the Royal Lady Knights tied for fourth place as the 1A state golf championships finished up Wednesday at North Bellingham Golf Course.

Presgraves, who was in the top 10 following Tuesday's first round, wound up 11th. She followed her first-day 96 with a 105. Her overall tally of 201 was one stroke behind 10th-place Claire Peterson of Charles Wright Academy.

Forester shot a 103 on both days of the tournament, with her 206 good enough for 13th place. Chelan freshman Kelli Bowers was the individual champion, while the Chewelah Cougars took the team title with 43 points. Seattle Christian was second (30), with Overlake third (24) and Royal scoring 18 points to tie with Charles Wright for fourth.

Royal's Joe Perkins had the best performance of any Columbia Basin golfer at state, finishing in a three-way tie for fifth in the 1A boys meet. Perkins shot a 79 on Tuesday, but followed it with a 73 yesterday. His total of 152 tied with Nick Miller of Bellevue Christian and Kyle McLeod of Charles Wright. Chelan junior Dane deQuilettes was the individual champion at 148.

Royal's DJ Solis finished Wednesday at 83, giving him a two-day total of 163, good for 25th place. The Knights scored 51 points, ninth among 1A schools, with Charles Wright winning the title (82.5).

In the 4A boys competition at Shuksan GC, Moses Lake's Rick Gleed and Zac McDougall qualified for round two and finished just a stroke apart. Gleed, a sophomore, shot a 79 for Wednesday and had a two-day total of 154, tying him for 35th. McDougall, a junior, shot an 80 on Wednesday and wound up tied for 39th at 155.

The Chiefs were 10th in the team standings with six points. Eastlake sophomore Kevin Penner was the individual champion at 137, while Kamiak took the team crown with 71.5 points.

Three area boys qualified for day two of the 2A competition at Bellingham Golf and Country Club, but all had higher scores Wednesday. Ephrata's Austin Key was 37th, shooting an 85 for a two-day total of 167. Othello's Jason Brault (80-89—169) and Brandon Hoksbergen (79-90—169) tied for 40th.

Hockinson placed two golfers in the top four to win the 2A team title (149.5), with the Hawks' Gaston De La Torre taking the individual title at 141.

Quincy senior Hannah Ferguson was the only area player to make the cut in 2A girls play at Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. Ferguson followed her first-round 95 with a 104, putting her in a tie for 35th with Deer Park's Kelsey Dutton. Bellingham won the team title (156.5) behind champion Katie Sharpe (148) and runner-up Claire Rachor (161).

Lind High School senior KyLee Schmunk took fourth place in the 1B/2B girls tournament at Lake Padden GC, firing a two-day total of 198. Bear Creek's Sydney Conway was first among individuals (181) and Lopez Island was first among teams (43).

Lind's Ian Fitch (93-89—182) tied for 34th and teammate Bradley Neilan (93-90—183) was 36th in the 1B/2B boys tournament at Lake Padden. Lind scored 11.5 points to finish 10th in the team standings, well back of first-place Life Christian Academy (146). Life Christian's Andrew Putnam finished at 140 to win the state title.
