Tennis action heats up in Yakima

YAKIMA — A number of local high school tennis players will be hitting the courts for the state championships this Friday and Saturday.

Action for boys and girls in the 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B classifications takes place at the Yakima Tennis Center beginning Friday morning.

Quincy senior Cameron Rasmussen and Ephrata senior Tyler Danby are representing their respective schools in the 2A boys division. Rasmussen plays Klahowya junior Chris Zumdieck Friday at noon. Danby faces W.F. West junior Eric Guenther, also at noon.

Rasmussen is matched up in a pod opposite Washougal's Jordan Webberley and Medical Lake's Max Nelson. If he beats Klahowya's Zumdieck, he'll face Webberley or Nelson in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. A loss pits him against Webberley or Nelson in a consolation match at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Danby's pod includes Sehome's Matt Goldfogel and Eatonville's Mark Mettler. Quarterfinal and consolation times against those opponents are the same as Rasmussen's.

In 2A doubles, Othello's TD Peterson and Sam Harris open against Medical Lake's Dallon Bogart and Tyler Lemasters. That match will be played Friday at 9 a.m. The winner advances to a 1:30 p.m. quarterfinal, with the loser playing in consolations at 2 p.m. Fife seniors Robert Gustafson and Josh Scothorne, along with W.F. West's Jordan Giske and Kashif Khan, are in the same pod.

Quincy's Jay Knodell and Blake Van Dyke are paired up in the opposite half of the bracket. The Jacks' duo faces Centralia juniors Tony Mendoza and Sean Stanley in a 10 a.m. opener on Friday. They'll face Tanner Gallo and Alberto Tiradossi of Anacortes or Cody Hanson and Michael Richards of Sequim at 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. on Friday.

In 2A girls action, Ephrata junior Britney Ratigan opens against Lynden junior Erica Bosman at 11 a.m. on Friday. Ratigan will play her second match at 3 p.m. that day, against either W.F. West's Taylor Giske or Sequim's Theresa Dew.

Royal's Kelcy Jansen opens 1A girls action against Charles Wright Academy senior Lauren Kelly. No time was announced for the Friday match. Jansen plays either Lauren Barnaby-Berry of Lake Roosevelt or Cheree Lucero of Tenino in her second match.

The 1B/2B girls tourney is an eight-player affair, with Wilson Creek freshman Ksenja Fredere playing Davenport's Jennifer Curley in the first round of singles.

The 1A, 2B and 1B boys are combining for a 16-entry tourney. In singles, Wilson Creek senior Kendall Fisher opens with Reardan junior Tim Eggelson.

In doubles, Royal's Michael Hebdon and Florian Menge will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the opening round. Royal's Jacob Jeske and Tyson Allred are also waiting to find out their first-round foes.
