MOSES LAKE — The letter carrier food drive resulted in record-breaking numbers.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Moses Lake chapter hoped to collect 15,000 pounds of food in Moses Lake for the city food bank. They ended up collecting 15,542 pounds. Last year they collected 12,580 pounds.

"It just turned out really good this year," Branch President Susan Hagaman said. "It was very rewarding for us."

Their 2008 goal is to collect 17,000 pounds.

"We look forward to next year," she added.

The food drive is held annually on the second Saturday of May.

The drive is in May because food banks are typically running lower than other months, she said. Most people donate food during the November and December holidays.

It seemed like more people were donating this year than last, she said. The majority of items collected included cereal, baby formula, packaged foods and canned goods.

"There was a lot of baby formula," Hagaman said. "I was very surprised."

The national food drive totals are expected to be released in June.
