Moses Lake Council reviews branding

Some things will stay the same

MOSES LAKE — Sinkiuse Square in Moses Lake will remain as is.

Destination Development Inc. suggested renaming it to match the proposed water sport theme and repaint one of the nearby murals to depict something more fitting at a Monday night meeting.

The Moses Lake city council discussed the proposed changes during their regular meeting Tuesday. The council and mayor opposed some of the suggestions.

"That mural should stay no matter what," Mayor Ron Covey said, referring to the Chief Moses mural.

Councilmember Richard Pearce said the name and the murals should not change due to their historical value to the city.

He suggested more plaques and educational references explaining the historical significance of the Chief Moses mural, Monte Holm mural and Sinkiuse Square.

"They have some significance and they should explain what they are," Pearce said.

Council has been struggling with renaming Blue Heron Park for several years.

Councilmember Dick Deane shared an idea.

He suggested renaming the park Half Sun, as it is the English translation of Chief Moses' name.

The mayor explained the chief may be linked to the Sinkiuse, a nomadic tribe who once lived in the Moses Lake area, and that it ties in well together.
