MOSES LAKE — The Grant/South Adams County Relay for Life began Friday with a showing greater than expected, raising money for cancer research and treatment.

"There's no possible way to describe it," Moses Lake volunteer and event chair Donna Anderson said.

The turnout was "way beyond expectations."

Before the event started there was a recognition of sponsors and an address by guest speaker Jeff Newell, a cancer survivor. Newell was emotional while he shared his personal story and said how much it means for people to participate. Newell's hope is for cancer prevention and treatment to be so advanced, there won't be a need for a relay.

Between 150 and 160 cancer survivors walked the first lap and more than 60 teams followed at the next lap before everyone joined in.

Cheri Stoker, American Cancer Society staff member and community relationship manager, said the amount raised at the start of the event was around $90,000, adding the goal was $110,000.

Newell said his cancer diagnosis gave him a more positive outlook, with an attitude of feeling alive. He says people who have never gone to a relay event may think it is a somber activity, but the attitude present is one of hope.

"Collectively, our hearts are bigger than cancer," he said.

Throughout the night, activities such as the Mr. Relay beauty contest and a midnight dance contest continued the upbeat tone.

He said relay for life is important because it raises funds and awareness.

"My purpose is to encourage people to get tested early," he said.

Annual physicals, check-ups and self-examinations are crucial, but it's important to go to a doctor and not self-diagnose, he said.

Anderson said as of noon Saturday, the total amount raised was $129,000 and she expects the final figure to be close to $135,000.
