Lloyd R. Almos

Lloyd R. Almos, 91, Moses Lake resident, former longtime Yakima resident and retired Captain of the Yakima Fire Department, passed away Friday, May 18, 2007, at Summerwood Special Care Center in Moses Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1020 South A St., Moses Lake, with Pastor David Daugs officiating. Private family committal services will precede at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Warden. Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel and Crematory, Moses Lake.

Lloyd was born March 10, 1916, in Estelline, S.D., son of the late John and Mary (Hammer) Almos. He was raised and educated in the Estelline and Lake Poinsett area of South Dakota. As a young man he moved out to Washington state and worked at a logging camp in the Naches area. After the start of World War II he was drafted into the Army in 1941 and served as an infantry medic in the South Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his service. Following his discharge he returned to Washington and was married to Eilene J. Hegge in Yakima on Sept. 28, 1946. Within a short time he also began working as a fireman for the City of Yakima where he remained until retiring as captain in 1974. In his off time and especially after retirement he worked for many years at Akland Irrigation Company.

Lloyd and Eilene enjoyed spending their winters in the Mesa, Ariz., area and had 25 wonderful years of memories there. They also enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Gateswingers in Yakima and various groups in Arizona, and playing golf and bridge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the many hours spent in these pastimes with his son, Jerry. He was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Yakima where he had served on the church council for decades and most recently of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Moses Lake. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Eilene of Moses Lake; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tom Jarman, Moses Lake, Judy and John Rolfs, East Wenatchee, Wash.; two sisters, Nellie Stewart and Orpha Anderson, both of Lake Norden, S.D.; six grandchildren, Matt Jarman, Nick Jarman, Jennifer and Brian Daniel, Hilary Smith, Brooke and Bryan Cheney and Jamie Almos; one great-grandson, Tyler Daniel.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jerry Almos in 1996, six brothers, Howard, Ernest, Melvin, Charles, John and James and two sisters, Susan Nowlin and Betty Burke.
