Jacks' season abruptly ended on Prosser pitching gem
Quincy held hitless in loser-out game
QUINCY - The Quincy Jacks, hoping to keep their season alive with a win over the Prosser Mustangs Friday, were eliminated from the CWAC District Tournament as Prosser's Tyler Leighty pitched a no-hitter to give the Mustangs a 4-0 victory.
Leighty struck out 15 Quincy batters and never gave the Jacks a chance to get their offense going. The Prosser starter used a combination of power and control to prevent Quincy's hitters from making solid contact, as the Jacks put only a few balls sharply into play.
Despite Quincy's struggles at the plate, the Jacks actually brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of a wild seventh inning.
In the seventh, Quincy's Brady Lee led off the inning with a hotly disputed walk. On the play, Lee checked his swing on a pitch out of the zone for ball four. Both Leighty and the Prosser coaching staff were unhappy with the call, believing Lee didn't check his swing before the bat came through the strike zone. The call clearly rattled the Prosser pitcher, as Leighty then walked Craig Petersen to put two runners on base.
After a pair of strikeouts, Leighty issued his third walk of the inning to Case Hinkins. With the bases loaded, Leighty came back to strike out Dan Somers and complete the no hitter.
Defensively, walks, bad luck, a couple mistakes allowed Prosser to take an early lead without much offensive firepower.
In the second inning, Quincy starting pitcher Colby Melburn walked the leadoff batter, then gave up a single to put runners at first and second. After a fielder's choice advanced the runners 90 feet, Prosser's Ben Gibson shanked a ball into the air that dropped just in front of Max Melburn, who charged from third base for the ball. The throw to first wasn't in time to get Gibson for the third out of the inning, allowing the game's first run to score.
Prosser added to their lead in the third inning, as leadoff batter Ryan Foster reached base after being hit by a pitch and then scored on a tough break for the Jacks.
On the subsequent play, the Quincy right fielder lost a fly ball in the sun, turning what could have been an easy out into a stand-up double for Prosser's Liam O'Brien that plated the second run of the game. The Mustangs later picked up their third run of the game on a single that just found its way through and into left field to score O'Brien from third base.
The Mustangs tallied their final run of the game in the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles by Foster and O'Brien.
