Soap Lake talks rollerblading

SOAP LAKE - Soap Lake council discussed the usage of the school district-owned tennis courts Wednesday night.

"Rollerblades do not belong on tennis courts," Councilmember Marina Romary said. "Tennis courts should be tennis courts."

"You're exactly right," Councilmember JoAnn Rushton said.

At the previous council meeting, Mayor Wayne Hovde said a large number of youth are using the courts for roller hockey. He noticed no damage or problems with the courts being used.

Council plans to issue a letter to the district requesting Rollerblades not be used on courts.

At any given time there are 20 to 30 youth playing roller hockey at the courts, Police Chief Jim Dorris said.

The city has the option to budget for construction of a rink since it is growing in popularity, City Attorney Jim Whitaker said.

Council should work to find a different site for the sport, Romary said.

Council determined the skateboard park would not be an adequate site because a large, flat space it needed. Council will consider the creation of a site for the sport.
