EPHRATA — The Ephrata School board acknowledged the high school newspaper "Eye of the Tiger" Monday for its third place award in a competition.

The contest through the Washington Journalism Education Association was March 10 in Puyallup, Wash. It received third place in the "best of show" category. Wenatchee High School won first place, and Peninsula High School won second.

Ephrata High School senior and Eye of the Tiger Editor in Chief Carly La Plant said many hours go into the production of the newspaper.

"We've worked so hard this year and it's a really big honor for us," La Plant said.

La Plant, 18, received a superior score for feature writing in the competition. It is her second year of involvement in journalism.

Adviser Lois Gibbens noted 165 students competed, and just 13 received a superior score. She is just one of two in the feature writing category for newspapers to receive the score.

"I've got a great group of kids and they want to do it right," Gibbens said.
