Warriors sweep doubleheader with Waterville

HARTLINE — Almira/Coulee-Hartline played a pair of games with Waterville that were as different as night and day, but in the end found a way to win both contests, with the Warriors picking up 10-0 and 11-10 victories over the visiting Shockers Tuesday.

Game one began as a pitchers' duel, with ACH's Mike McKay going strike for strike with Waterville's Rob Fila. McKay got the best of his Waterville counterpart, throwing a one-hit shutout and striking out eight to pick up the win.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Greg Giese smacked a two-out, bases loaded triple to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. ACH didn't stop there, as they piled up eight runs in the inning. Giese finished the game 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

The Warriors added two more in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run rule.

ACH played from behind in the second game, trailing 6-2 entering the fifth inning. The Warriors got two runs back in the fifth to narrow the margin, then took a 9-8 lead with five runs in the sixth inning.

Waterville wasn't done, as they scored a pair of runs in the seventh to go back on top 10-9. ACH responded, as McKay drove in the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors an 11-10 victory over the Shockers.

Travis Bean threw three innings of relief ball, striking out three on his way to his first victory of the season.

McKay was 4 for 5 in the second game with 3 RBIs and finished the doubleheader 6-9 with 4 RBIs. Reid Ashley was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a double in the first game, and Bean went 2-5 with 3 RBIs in the doubleheader.
