City takes over watering costs

OTHELLO — The Othello Beautification Committee received some help from the city Monday night.

"We don't have enough money so we're asking for your help," Committee Member Ann Sperl said.

Sperl and Committee Member Sandy Dodge requested council install a water meter and pay the water fee for a landscape project on the corner of 14th Avenue and Main Street. Previously the committee would hook up to a nearby fire hydrant for watering needs.

"Last year somebody caught kids jumping on it," Sperl said about the hydrant hook-ups. "That's a dangerous situation."

Council agreed to install a $225 meter and to pay the water bill expected to be about $40 for the season.

"I think this is the least the city of Othello can do for beautification," Councilmember Ken Caylor said.

The committee is working on numerous projects around the city to clean up the area and improve surroundings, Dodge said.

The committee is searching to recruit a group of people to clean up a portion of 14th Avenue spanning from the residential area to the hospital, she said. They plan to improve the "Welcome to Othello" sign and install more benches around the city in the future.
