Soaring events begin on Sunday

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Airport will be the site of the Soaring Society of America's Region 8 Soaring Championships, July 1-7.

About 30 contestants will participate and be divided into classes for sport, open and 15-meter sailplanes.

Spectators will have the best view of the events from the lawn or parking lot next to the airport office, located at 1990 E. Division.

The flights will take place with weather permitting. Launch times will generally be between noon and 1:30 p.m. depending on when wind conditions are at peak conditions. The flights are scored based on speed and distance through three or four turn points.
