Michael James Brendan Mallon

1924-2004

Michael James Brendan Mallon was born Nov. 25, 1924, and died at the age of 79, on March 26, 2004, at his home in Soap Lake.

He was the third born in a family of six in Philadelphia, Pa., and spent some of his younger years in Cuba. He was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines. He worked as a specialized engineer for Washington State Highway Laboratories and retired at the age of 57.

Michael was an experienced mountain climber, archer, equestrian and all around outdoorsman. He spent his retirement years running marathons, speed skating, ballroom dancing, and gold mining. His passion was collecting and refurbishing World War II vehicles and vintage military firearms. He was active in his local VFW and American Legion. His Roman Catholic faith never wavered and remained an important part of his life.

He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Joseph and Brendan Mallon, Eilene Burke and Maria Gregg, all living in the Portland area, as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his seven remaining children, Michael Jr., Suzanne, Colleen, Annie, Mary, Patricia, and Rebecca, who think of him with love and pride. He was followed in death by his daughter, Teresa, who adored him. He was an honorable man and is our hero. His easy smile and friendly ways will be sorely missed by all. He was a man of faith and patriotism.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 22, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Portland, followed by a military service at the Willamette National Cemetery, also in Portland. A reception will follow the services at St. Peter's Catholic Church.
