Townsend leads large contingent at triathlon

MOSES LAKE — Kendall Townsend led all athletes in the olympic open division at the Moses Lake Family Triathlon held Saturday, June 9.

Townsend completed a 1-mile swim in 20 minutes and 40 seconds, a 24-mile bike ride in 1 hour, 1 minute and 59 seconds, and a 6.2-mile run in 40 minutes, 56 seconds. Townsend's total time of 2:05:10.2 was about 16 seconds faster than the runner-up, Sam Picicci.

Ken Collins (2:09:46.1), Fred Funge (2:10:03.7) and Jeff Blackwell (2:16:39.4) rounded out the top five in the Olympic division.

In the sprint open division, which consisted of a half-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3-mile run, Brandon Bartell turned in the winning time of 1:08:51.2. Heiko Stopsack was second in 1:10:13.7 and Angela Craig third in 1:13:34.5. Linda Mclean (1:14:46.8) and Niki Stewart (1:15:05.4) rounded out the top five.

The trio of Anji Weissenfluh, Melissa Bonanno and James True won the sprint relay division with a time of 1:28:37.5. Kristi Guin, Helen Halloran and John Guin were second (1:30:34.5).

John Scarcello led all athletes in the family open division with a time of 1:08:02.4. The family division's course included a quarter-mile swim instead of a half-mile. Ethan Tonnemaker was second (1:09:45.7) and Debi Raines third (1:14:03.4), with Rebekah Glass (1:21:18.8) and Joel Francik (1:22:20.4) rounding out the top five.

The Lefler boys (Riley, Ryan and Reed) captured first place in the family-relay division at 1:27:15.7. Victoria Dalrymple, Casey Hornig and Alec Naccarato were second (1:32:58.7).

One hundred and 70 athletes in all turned out for the triathlon. Top 20 finishers in each open division are listed below.
