Moses Lake girls win Wenatchee basketball crown
WENATCHEE — Moses Lake High School's girls basketball team had another successful weekend of summer action, winning five straight games en route to a tournament title.
Moses Lake opened the tournament Saturday with a 41-21 victory over Eastmont. While the Chiefs scored only 2 points in the first quarter, they rallied big time in the second half and broke away from a tight game. Carly Noyes had 12 points and Jordan Loera added 10 to lead the Chiefs.
In game two, the Chiefs staved off a poor offensive performance to defeat Othello 30-25. Carly Noyes had 12 points, four rebounds and five blocked shots, while Loera chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Chiefs blew out Brewster in game three, 61-27, behind double-figure scoring from three players. Moses Lake had 21 assists on its 26 made field goals. Carly Noyes had team-highs with 18 points and nine boards. Ann Noyes had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Kelly Sutherland added 10 points, four rebounds and two assists. Loera finished with 8 points and six assists.
In the semifinals against Wenatchee, Moses Lake continued to cruise and went on for a 69-27 thumping of the Panthers, who were playing without standout Dani Hallberg. Unselfish play was again a key, as the Chiefs dished out 23 assists on 31 baskets.
Moses Lake committed only five turnovers in the contest. Carly Noyes had 22 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and three assists, with Ann Noyes collecting 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Vanessa Brischle was the Chiefs' other double digit scorer with 10, and added four rebounds and three assists. Loera had 9 points, three rebounds and four assists, and Sutherland scored eight and dished out five assists.
In Sunday's championship with Chelan, the Chiefs jumped to an early lead and led the entire game, holding on for a 46-38 triumph. Moses Lake missed eight layups, but had enough offense to get past the Goats, a perennial 1A power.
Carly Noyes had team-highs with 14 points and eight boards. Loera added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Brischle (9 points, two rebounds, three assists and two blocks), along with Ann Noyes (8 points, five rebounds, two assists and three blocks) were also key contributors.
Moses Lake improved its summer record to 9-1 at the tournament.
The Chiefs' varsity roster also included Lorin Montgomery, Chayla Hirz, Kayde Williamson, Kaitlin Waites and Alexis Ballinger.
Moses Lake's junior varsity squad also won the championship in Wenatchee with a 4-0 record. The team was comprised of Nicole Dalrymple, Shavita McDaniel, Jinnequa Otto, Knorra Cano, Deja Davis, Natalie Diaz, Sarah Garcia, Tiffany Morris, Lacey Padilla, Megan Sutherland and Felicia Sanders.
Moses Lake's next summer stop is Gonzaga University, where the Chiefs play 15 games in seven days at GU's annual tournament.
