Pirates go deep into the night for win

| July 26, 2007 9:00 PM

SILVERDALE — The Moses Lake Pirates beat the Kitsap BlueJackets Tuesday night in 16 innings, a game that lasted 5 hours and 34 minutes.

The contest was the longest of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League season, in both innings and elapsed time.

Billy Swanson reached on Kitsap third baseman Tyler Owens' error to begin the 16th, then stole second base. Zach Kim walked and Steve Tinoco was hit by a pitch, loading the sacks for Zach Hedges.

Kitsap's eighth pitcher of the night, Barrett Kanyer, retired Hedges on a pop-up, but Kevin Coddington followed with a two-run single.

The victory brought the Pirates (23-9) another game closer to sewing up the East Division title, and put them 3 1/2 games in front of Kitsap in the chase for the league's best record and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Moses Lake opens a three-game series in Bellingham tonight at 7 p.m. Starting pitchers haven't been announced.
