Fire District No. 5 reports Fourth of July brush fires

GRANT COUNTY — Grant County Fire District No. 5 responded to reports of small brush fires on the Fourth of July.

"We had four in the evening," said Lieutenant Dan Smith. "They were just small, under an acre brush fires."

Because of the locations of the fires, fireworks appear to be the cause, Smith said.

Firefighters responded to a brush fire in the sand dunes area, another in the 4200 block of Airway Drive, and a third in the 4600 block of Road K. An additional fire was reported, but when firefighters arrived it was no longer burning.

"All in all, it was a relatively good Fourth," Smith said.

The number of fires was likely down from previous years, he said.

No injuries occurred. The only property loss was grass and sagebrush.

To prepare for the Fourth of July, the fire district brought six trucks in from stations surrounding the district's centrally located station on Nelson Road. Two groups of firefighters were set up to alternate between calls, Smith said.

"We were ready for it," he said.

The largest fire reported to Grant County Fire District No. 5 occurred July 3. The fire was three to four acres in size in the sand dunes area.
