Dietzen ends with 84 at amateur headliner

BREMERTON — Moses Lake golfer Jonathan Dietzen shot a final round of 84 Friday and finished well back in the pack at the 81st Washington State Men's Amateur Championship, played at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Dietzen finished with a four-round total of 322 on the 7,037-yard, par-72 Olympic course at Gold Mountain.

Joel Dahmen of Clarkston decided his five-stroke lead going into the last hole wasn't good enough, so he holed his second shot on the par-4 18th hole for eagle to win the tournament going away.

With a two-stroke lead going into the final round, Dahmen just wanted to keep his ball in play.

"My goal was to just hit the greens in regulation, forcing the other players to play better than par," Dahmen said. "My putting has been so good lately, I was confident that would give me the win."

Dahmen was the only player in the field to shoot under par all four days. His final round 2-under-par 70 led him to a six-stroke victory. A sophomore-to-be on the University of Washington golf team, he played in four varsity tournaments last year as a Husky.

This is not the first time Dahmen has held a high golf presence in the state of Washington. Dahmen was once one of the best junior golfers in the state. He won the 3A high school state championship twice (2003 and 2006), and was a two-time scholar athlete at Clarkston High School.

John Cassidy of Yelm finished in the second spot at 3-under-par and Derek Berg of Duvall finished at 1-under in the third spot. Only three players were under par for the championship.

Dahmen's name will be engraved on the WSGA Men's Amateur-Bodenhamer Cup Trophy, and will join some legendary champions in golf, including Fred Couples, the 1992 Masters champion and Northwest legend; and Kermit Zarley, a longtime PGA Tour player.

Gold Mountain was the site of the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. The course also hosted the 2007 U.S. Open sectionals and annually hosts the University of Washington Husky Invitational.

The Men's Amateur is one of six state championships conducted annually by the Washington State Golf Association. Other championships include the WSGA Men's Best-Ball, WSGA Women's Best-Ball, WSGA Member Club Team Championship and WSGA Senior Men's Amateur.
