Heart smart art

MOSES LAKE — Some Basin families might hang their hearts from the ceiling for all to see this weekend.

The Moses Lake Museum and Art Center offers its free family activity Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

At the event, participants make a sweetheart valentine mobile, either for that special someone or to hang in their homes. The handmade mobiles are made by cutting, gluing and adding such unique decorations as lace and candy.

"It's just wonderful for kids to create a craft and be with a parent or a sponsor, a brother or a sister, something," Manager Terry Mulkey said.

All supplies are furnished.

"We have Family Saturdays on most first Saturdays of each month," Mulkey said. "It's something we've done for nearly 10 years. It's obviously affordable, and we like to bring families together."

Museum Technician Ann Golden said each activity is seasonal, such as making a kite in April or a flower pot in May.

Golden said the activities are on the first Saturday of every month from January through fall.

"I think it's just another way to connect with the community, let the community come in and see what we do have to offer," she said. "We usually have a pretty good turnout, and it's always fun for the parent to work with the child."

An event can draw anywhere from 10 people to 80, Mulkey added, and is open to any interested community member.

"It's been pretty successful, there have been some good responses to it," he said.

"It takes about 20 minutes, you can come anytime between noon and 2 p.m.," Golden agreed. "Pretty easygoing."
