Chiefs win triple overtime thriller

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs earned their first lead of the game in the first overtime against the Pirates Friday.

"The kids came out and battled," said Moses Lake head coach Brant Mayo.

After getting fouled, Quinn Baker headed to the line with 2 minutes remaining in the first overtime and went 1-for-2 to give the Chiefs a 57-56 advantage over Davis.

The Pirates tied the game with a 1-for-2 stint of their own at the free-throw line. Neither team scored again in the period.

To begin the second overtime, Davis opened up a 4-point lead.

With 2 minutes remaining in the 4-minute period, Cody Meeks drove the lane for a layup, giving the Chiefs their first points of the extra time.

Davis continued to pressure Moses Lake, capitalizing on a turnover to extend the lead back to 4.

Baker was fouled with under a minute to play and went 2-for-2 on a 1-and-1 opportunity to cut the Pirates' lead to 2. With 15 seconds remaining in the period, Josh Loera connected with Baker in the paint for a layup to tie the game at 63 and send the game into its third overtime.

Just 15 seconds into the third overtime, Baker was fouled hard sending him to the bench. Seth Bruneel came into the ball game for his first minutes of the night, shooting Baker's free throws, going 1-for-2 to give the Chiefs a 1-point lead.

"Seth (Bruneel) shooting those freethrows in the toughest thing you can do and it's a testimony to that kid," said Mayo.

Moses Lake extended the lead with another 1-for-2 stint at the line, this time from Loera. A putback from Meeks converted the 1-for-2 effort into a 3-point play for the Chiefs and gave Moses Lake a 4-point lead.

The Chiefs finished out the win with Tyson Garcia and Meeks heading to the line to combine for a 5-for-6 effort. Moses Lake held the Pirates scoreless through the final overtime period.

"We're very happy to get that win and protect our home court," said Mayo. "Talking to Quinn (Baker), he's played them eight or nine times now and that's the first time he's got them. Davis is always a tough matchup for us."

Moses Lake's win was made sweeter by the comeback. The Chiefs trailed by as many as 14 points.

Davis came out strong earning 11 unanswered points in the first quarter to take a 13-3 lead before Meeks was able to end the drought with a 2-for-2 trip the the free-throw line with 2 minutes remaining in the period. They were the last points Moses Lake scored in the first quarter.

The Chiefs slowly gained momentum in the second quarter with an and-1 opportunity by Meeks on a putback. A steal and layup by Jared Walker and a 3-ball for Loera off of a Meeks steal.

Moses Lake went into the locker room with a 7-point deficit but opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Loera to spark the offense. Garcia added a 3-ball of his own to mark the Chiefs' next bucket.

A pull-up jumper from Baker along the baseline cut the Davis lead to 2 with 5 minutes

remaining in the third quarter. Loera ended the quarter with another 3-pointer.

Garcia drained yet another 3 to open the fourth quarter and close the scoring gap to make it a 41-38 ball game and a 3-ball from Loera on Moses Lake's next possession tied it up.

The back-and-forth continued and took the teams into overtime.

Baker led the scoring with 21 points and earned 11 boards. Loera added 18 points and 3 steals for Moses Lake. Meeks rounded out the stat leaders with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
