Chiefs 58, Bombers 12

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs took care of the Bombers easily Thursday, losing just three bouts in the Columbia Basin League dual meet.

"Losing to Pasco the other night didn't feel good but those matchups will be better next time," said Moses Lake head coach Jamie Wise. "The kids are pretty resilient and today was just another dual."

David Peralez, at 112 pounds, had the first in a series of four bouts that got the crowd fired up and gave Moses Lake a sizeable lead.

Peralez took down Jake Beiber to take a quick 2-0 lead but saw it erased at the end of the first round by an escape and takedown from Beiber.

Both wrestlers were held scoreless through the second period.

Peralez was able to pull away from Beiber with two consecutive 2-point near falls. Beiber was able to battle back with a reversal but could not hold of Peralez who closed out the match with an escape and takedown for a 9-5 victory.

"I thought David did a good job coming back in the third round of his match to win," said Wise.

Gabe Guzman added to the Moses Lake lead with a 12-0 win over Corey Carpenter in the 119-pound bout. He earned a takedown in the first round and a 2-point near fall in the second. Enjoying a 4-0 lead going into the third period, Guzman pulled away from Carpenter with a reversal and back-to-back 3-point near falls.

At 125 pounds, Rico Moreno held his own against Jordan Manthei, jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first period and continuing to pressure the Richland wrestler in the second round. He earned a reversal, a 2-point near fall and a takedown in the second period. Moreno closed out the bout with a pin in the third round.

"Rico Moreno did a great job beating a tough kid," Wise said.

Tom Pfiffer capped off the surge that pushed the Chiefs out of reach at 130 pounds against Kody Wyrick. Pfiffer took an early lead in the match with a takedown but had it erased by a reversal from Wyrick to even the bout at 2-2. Pfiffer pulled away to end the round with an escape and a takedown.

Wyrick opened the second round with a reversal but saw Pfiffer come back after an escape and a penalty against Wyrick for unnecessary roughness.

Pfiffer earned an escape to open the third period but was taken down by Wyrick. The Richland takedown was too little too late and Pfiffer was able to record an 8-6 win.

"I thought all the kids and especially the kids who don't normally wrestle varsity fought really well tonight," said Wise.

Brett Frederickson pinned Aaron Sevigny in the 215-pound bout with 59 seconds left in the second round after jumping out to a dominating 7-0 lead.

At 285 pounds Tad Harman pinned DJ Clark just 46 seconds into the first round.

Andrew Valdez made short work of Channing Winterrose in the 103-pound bout, pinning the Richland wrestler with 10 seconds to spare in the first period.

John Silva pinned Josh Siekawitch with 51 seconds left in the second period at 140 pounds.

At 145 pounds Cody Hoiness and his opponent Marco Nicacio held each other scoreless through the first period. Hoiness closed out the match in the second round with a pin at 1:02.

Josh Nielsen pinned Kyle McCue with five seconds left in the first round of the 160-pound bout.

"The kids fought hard all the way through," said Wise.

John Fackrell won the 189-pound match by forfeit to open the dual meet.

Parker Byington lost 10-8 to Dallon Rindlisbacher in the 135-pound bout.

"Parker's match should have gone into overtime," Wise said.

At 152 pounds Blaine Zucker lost 6-1 to Jeff Crawford. Justin West was pinned with 18 seconds remaining in the second period of the 171-pound bout to Jeremy Knighten.
