Chiefs 53, Davis 31

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs got off to a quick start against Davis and were rewarded with a 53-31 victory.

Carly Noyes earned the first 7 points for Moses Lake with assists from Kelly Sutherland and Marielle McKean on her first two trips down court. The early success put the Chiefs up 7-3 with under six minutes to play in the first quarter.

"I thought we got outscored in a quarter tonight. We've only been outscored in three quarters so far this season," said Moses Lake head coach Matt Strophy. "It's a good way for us to prepare for our first real challenge — Richland."

Moses Lake went through a field goal drought for the remainder of the period with the rest of their points coming from the foul line. McKean began the freethrow stint with a 2-for-2 trip and had it followed up by back-to-back trips to the line by Lorin Montgomery who went 3-for-4.

Davis answered the five freebies with two buckets to make it 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Brin Bergeson ended the seven-minute stretch without a field goal driving to the basket and picking up an and-1 opportunity. She missed the freethrow but had it scooped up by Ann Noyes who got the putback to give the Chiefs an 8-point lead.

Four minutes later McKean drew a foul and went 1-for-2 from the line. She continued to pressure the Davis defense and earned an and-1 to make it 20-8 with three minutes left in the half.

The Lady Pirates scored seven unanswered points as the half wound down to pull within four of Moses Lake.

Sutherland found Ashley McKean for a layup to end the half with Moses Lake on top 22-14.

The shooting woes both teams suffered in the first half seemed to be forgotten by the Chiefs who started the third quarter with a 7-0 scoring run. Sutherland kicked off the run with a 3-ball, her first of four, and then dished to Ann Noyes on the next trip down court to push the lead to 10. Carly Noyes extended the lead with a putback to cap off the scoring drive.

"Kelly's (Sutherland) four threes, and three of them in the second half, really helped us out," said Strophy. "We were getting out of position under the basket. We needed more of those threes in rhythm or the plays to Carly that we had to begin the game."

Moses Lake continued to pressure Davis on the offensive end with Ann Noyes finding Carly Noyes for a layup and following it up with a drive by Marielle McKean one minute later.

Vanessa Brischle ended the quarter with a 2-for-2 stint at the line for the Chiefs to give Moses Lake a 37-23 lead and opened the fourth with another perfect trip to the line.

The Chiefs found their rhythm as the fourth quarter wore on with Sutherland hitting back-to-back threes. She earned her final 3-pointer with three minutes left in the game to give Moses Lake a 50-29 lead.

The final minutes of the matchup were marred with fouls and turnovers by Davis.

Montgomery finished out the night with one more trip to the line for Moses Lake and Bergeson earned the last field goal of the night to give the Chiefs the win.

Carly Noyes led the Chiefs with 15 points. Sutherland put 12 points on the board for Moses Lake, all of them coming from beyond the arc. Marielle McKean rounded out the scoring leaders for Moses Lake with 10 points and going 4-for-5 from the freethrow line.
