Chiefs dominate out-of-state opponents

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake, despite being scouted by Sandpoint, was able to dominate the Bulldogs 85-42 Friday.

The Chiefs allowed just seven points in the first and third quarters of the contest against Sandpoint and quickly established their scoring presence with a layup and a second-chance jumper by Quinn Baker to give Moses Lake a 6-2 lead in the first period.

"We were stable in the first half and talked about just going out and play with pride in the second half," said Moses Lake head coach Brant Mayo.

With three minutes left in the opening quarter, Josh Loera hit a 3-ball on an inbounds play to give the Chiefs nine.

Baker continued to lead Moses Lake with shooting from both the line and field with two layups and a 2-for-2 trip to the line in opening minutes of the second quarter.

Cody Meeks also got in on the scoring action, going 2-for-2 from the line in the bonus.

Late in the second, Tyson Garcia found Baker for a layup. Meeks followed it up with another layup for the Chiefs' last field goal of the half, giving Moses Lake a 29-18 lead.

Baker scored 19 of his 25 points in the first half.

The third quarter opened with a 1-for-2 trip to the line and a layup by BJ Guerra to give the Chiefs a 12-point margin.

Garcia opened the game up even further with his only 3-ball of the night.

The Chiefs continued to slug away at the Bulldogs with an and-one by Baker, a layup by Guerra and a 3 by Meeks to give Moses Lake a 45-22 advantage.

Loera hit his second and final 3-pointer of the game with three minutes left in the third.

Moses Lake finished out the quarter with a putback from Garcia.

"I'm really pleased with our effort in the second half," said Mayo.

Casey Secrist opened up the fourth quarter with an and-one for a 3-point play and had it followed up by a 3 by Ryan Carpenter to give the Chiefs a 58-27 lead.

Seth Bruneel lit up the scoreboard for Moses Lake with a 3-ball of his own. Meeks earned another 3 as well to far outpace Sandpoint.

Secrist recorded Moses Lakes final field goal of the game.

"Hopefully this win will be a good springboard to get us back into league play next week," said Mayo.

Baker led the team with 25 points. Meeks earned 12 points. Loera had three assists and three steals.
