Seven Chiefs place in top 20 at state swim
FEDERAL WAY — Moses Lake's 400 freestyle relay team of Federico Bettini, Marshall Goodrich, Eric Butterfield and Jeremy Grant earned the highest placing of the weekend for the Chiefs posting a time of 3:25.93 to take 14th.
"During the finals we lost some of our momentum and swam kind of flat, which definitely made a difference in our final placings and team rankings," said Tony St. Onge. "It was almost like they were trying too hard and ended up spinning their wheels just enough they were off a little, which is all it takes at state finals to go the wrong direction in the placings."
The 200 freestyle relay team of Bettini, Goodrich, Butterfield and Brad Reeder earned a 15th place finish with a time of 1:33.90.
Butterfield also earned a 15th place finish in the 200 freestyle with a 1:51.46.
Chad Borg recorded 188.90 points to finish 17th in the diving competition.
"We progressed as far as we could in a three-month season," said St. Onge. "Several of this year's state team returns next year and they could be an impact team at the state tournament if they make the right choices between now and then."
Four swimmers also competed in other individual races but did not make it out of the preliminary rounds: 100 breastroke, 17 - Reeder 1:04.59; 200 individual medley, 18 - Goodrich 2:09.32; 100 backstroke, 19 - Grant 59.30; 50 freestyle, 21 - Grant 23.34; 200 freestyle, 21 - Bettini 1:54.12.
This year's all-conference swimmers include: Goodrich first team 200 individual medley; Reeder second teams 200 individual medley and 100 breastroke; Grant second team 50 freestyle and honorable mention 100 backstroke; Butterfield honorable mention 100 freestyle; Bettini honorable mention 200 freestyle; Goodrich, Bettini, Butterfield and Grant first team 400 freestyle relay and second team 200 freestyle relay.
