Four Jacks place at Mat Classic
TACOMA — Four out of five is not bad.
Quincy put four wrestlers on the podium when all was said and done Saturday.
Senior Gabe Lindquist, wrestling at 130 pounds, earned the highest finish for the Jacks, placing third.
Lindquist swept his matches Friday — beating Kolten Dekoker of W.F. West and Steve Edmonds of Lakewood — to get a spot in the semi-finals Saturday.
The Lindquist lost in the semis to Kellen Hopkins of East Valley-Yakima, who went on to win the title, and fell into the consolation brackets. In his first consolation bout Saturday Lindquist defeated Dekoker for a second time to qualify for the third/fourth place match.
In his final bout as a Quincy wrestler, Lindquist defeated Edmonds, the other opponent he'd wrestled Friday, 2-0.
At 119 pounds, Jared Reyes defeated Tommy Williamson of Mt. Baker and Corey Mason of Klahowya Friday to earn a spot in the semis.
In Saturday's semi-finals bout, Reyes was beaten by Josh Berkenmeier of R.A. Long and found himself wrestling in the consolation brackets.
Reyes lost his first consolation bout against Gustavo Lopez of Wapato but qualified to wrestle for fifth/sixth place. Reyes fell to Buck Contreras of Mt. Baker to finish sixth.
In the 171-pound class Nick Melburn defeated Alex Pennington of Blaine and Russell Luellen of Elma to earn a chance to wrestle in the semi-finals.
Melburn's semis bout did not go as planned, with the wrestler losing to Kyle Knutson of Burlington Edison, putting him in the consolation rounds. Melburn lost his first consolation bout against Brady Paxman of Cedarcrest but qualified to wrestle for fifth/sixth place.
Melburn fell to Zeb Frongello of Sequim 13-0 to take sixth.
Henry Hernandez, wrestling at 125 pounds, was defeated by Mike Bargewell of Burlington Edison in the first round Friday but finished out with wins against Colin Cavanaugh of Burlington Edison and Mike Tran of R.A. Long.
Saturday, Hernandez lost to Noe Alejo of Woodland but qualified to wrestle for seventh/eighth place.
Hernandez defeated Mike Jones of Riverside-Chattaroy 8-3 to take seventh.
At 189 pounds, Kelly Schwint was defeated in the first two rounds — losing to Nick Dickson of Sequim and X Bowers of Aberdeen.
