Lady Vikings edge Treasure Valley

MOSES LAKE — Treasure Valley outpaced Big Bend in the first half but the Lady Vikings came back to win it in the second.

The Lady Chuckars grabbed the lead with the first bucket of the game and maintained it through the first 20 minutes of play Friday.

After nearly three minutes of play in the second half, Big Bend scored their first hoop of the half on a layup by Calli Jo Turner to make it 34-27.

A few minutes later, Whitney Rostad pulled up for a jumpshot to cut the Treasure Valley lead to 9.

Both teams followed up the Rostad bucket with back-to-back turnovers, Big Bend's coming first and then Treasure Valley recording a pair of their own.

Kim Bluff broke the string of turnovers for the Lady Vikings with a drive down the baseline for a layup to make it a 42-31 ball game. Rostad followed up the bucket with a quick steal but Big Bend was unable to capitalize on the effort.

Two quick fouls by Treasure Valley gave Big Bend an opportunity to score on an inbound pass, Turner was able to earn a layup to close the gap.

Both teams struggled to get to the hoop, causing a short scoring drought that ended with a 3-ball from Heather Burke of Big Bend and made it an 11-point game.

Cisca Moore followed up the 3 with a steal that was converted into another 3-pointer, this one from Britni Carty.

The Lady Vikings began to make a surge, with Turner going 4-for-4 from the line to close the gap to 11 again with under ten minutes to play. Turner scored a baby hook near the 6-minute mark to make it 55-45.

Her effort was followed by a 1-for-2 trip to the line by Carty and a 3-ball by Rostad. The scoring cut the lead to 6.

Treasure Valley pushed the lead back to 9 at the free-throw line after back-to-back Big Bend fouls.

The Lady Vikings countered the effort with a putback from Turner and a layup by Bluff.

Big Bend continued to frustrate Treasure Valley, forcing two fouls with 3 minutes left to play. The second foul sent Carty to the line where she went 1-for-2 and made it a 4-point game.

Back-to-back turnovers and back-to-back fouls, the second a technical foul, against Treasure Valley gave Big Bend's Turner the opportunity to tie the game with 1:32 left.

Turner went 4-for-4, tying the game at 58. Turner finished out the game at the free-throw line for the Lady Vikings, going 7-for-8 in all.

Carty added a 1-for-2 stint at the line in the closing minutes as well.

Turner led the team with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Carty added 13 points to the effort. Rostad earned 11 points and 5 boards for Big Bend. Bluff put up 10 points for the Lady Vikings.

Saturday Big Bend defeated Blue Mountain 67-55.
