Chiefs' losing streak reaches three games at Auburn-Riverside tournament

AUBURN - The Moses Lake girls basketball team didn't have the kind of trip they expected to have at the Riverside Invitational.
The Chiefs, ranked second in the 4A classification going into the tournament, lost three straight contests at the prestigious event featuring several powerhouse squads from the West Coast.
Following Thursday's defeat to Sheldon (Ore.), the Chiefs lost 59-55 in double overtime on Friday to Lake Stevens. On Saturday, they closed the tournament with a 52-49 setback to Mount Tahoma.
Against Lake Stevens, the Chiefs found themselves down 19 points before they rallied to take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter. But they couldn't handle the Vikings' Karri Gallagher, who scored seven of her game-high 27 points in the second overtime.
Jordan Loera had 20 points for Moses Lake, Carly Noyes scored 17 and Ann Noyes added eight.
Against Mount Tahoma, the Chiefs got solid performances from Carly Noyes (17 points), Kelly Sutherland (14) and Loera (10). But the Thunderbirds went on a 16-7 surge in the third period, the big difference in the game.
Moses Lake (6-3 overall, 1-0 Columbia Basin League) returns to league play this Friday, traveling to Walla Walla for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 42, Waterville 40
WATERVILLE - The Lady Warriors' holiday tournament started well against the host Shockers on Friday, as they held on for a two-point win.
"We just outplayed them, outhustled them, and probably should've won by more," ACH assistant coach Katie Stephens said.
Sarah Gloyn led the Warriors with 18 points and Niki Porterfield chipped in nine.
On Saturday, ACH dropped a 54-43 decision to the Entiat Tigers. Breanna Martin led the way with 11 points and Gloyn added 10. It was a loss the Warriors weren't completely disappointed with.
"The girls played really hard today and fought tough physically," Stephens said. "We just couldn't end up competing at the level Entiat did for the whole game."
The Warriors return to Northeast League action on Friday, hosting the Odessa Tigers at 6 p.m.
Soap Lake 50, Davenport 40
DAVENPORT - The Lady Eagles got a huge effort from senior Ariel Wernex, who led all scorers with 23 points on Friday in a holiday tournament opener.
Soap Lake's Mercedes Franks added 14 points and the Eagles led 30-22 at halftime.
On Saturday, the Eagles fell 53-33 to the undefeated Colton Wildcats. Wernex and Franks tied for the team-high with 10 points apiece and Tanya Babak chipped in eight. Soap Lake was in the game until Colton went on a 19-3 run during the third period.
The Eagles hit the road again on Friday for a league contest, playing the Oroville Hornets at 6 p.m.
Lacrosse-Washtucna 34, Lind-Ritzville 28
WASHTUCNA - On Friday, the Lady Broncos lost for just the second time in eight outings this season, dropping a non-league contest to the Tigercats.
The Broncos held the Tigercats scoreless in the second quarter and led 20-13 at halftime, but Lacrosse-Washtucna returned the favor in the third period by going on a 13-1 spurt.
Devon Killian led the Broncos with eight points and Danielle Sackmann added six.
Lind-Ritzville returns to Northeast League action on Friday at 6 p.m., hosting the Liberty Lancers from Spangle.
Boys basketball
Lind-Ritzville 45, Lacrosse-Washtucna 39
WASHTUCNA - The Broncos ran their overall record to 9-1 on Friday, outscoring the host Tigercats 12-7 in the fourth period for the win.
Lind-Ritzville jumped out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter before the Tigercats rallied. Cory Whitmore paced the Broncos with 14 points, while Alex Pfeifer, Matt Saetre and Jamie Stevenson added nine points apiece.
The Broncos return to Northeast League play on Friday, hosting Liberty-Spangle at 7:30 p.m.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 89, Waterville 61
WATERVILLE - In a Friday night shootout at the Waterville holiday tournament, the Warriors used a 31-8 run in the second quarter to fly past the Shockers.
ACH (2-6 overall) got 23 points from Kyle Tucker, 18 from Brandon Boutain and 12 from Quade Henderson. The Warriors scored at least 17 points in each period.
One night later, ACH dropped a 68-43 decision to the Entiat Tigers. Entiat pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring ACH 21-11 to take a 38-21 lead.
Tucker again paced the Warriors with 12 points and Cody Jess added 10. The Tigers had four players finish in double figures.
ACH plays host to Northeast League rival Odessa on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Sandpoint (Idaho) 67, Moses Lake 61
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - The Chiefs led 34-28 at halftime but fell in their final non-league outing on Saturday to the Bulldogs.
Moses Lake's Michael Olaniyan had 20 points and teammate Jarred Walker added 14, but the Chiefs weren't able to contain Sandpoint's Ryan Armbruster. The senior guard had 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Bulldogs took control with a 21-12 fourth-quarter spurt.
Josh Loera scored nine points and Scott Moberg added eight for Moses Lake.
A day earlier, the Chiefs were blown out by the Lake City (Idaho) Timberwolves in an 82-36 final.
Lake City bolted to a 51-22 halftime advantage and were never threatened again. Loera had 12 points to lead Moses Lake and Olaniyan added eight.
The Chiefs (3-6 overall, 0-1 Columbia Basin League) host the Walla Walla Blue Devils in a CBL contest on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Davenport 77, Soap Lake 53
DAVENPORT - The Eagles had three players finish in double-figure scoring, but couldn't keep pace with the Gorillas to open a holiday tournament on Friday.
Soap Lake's Marcos Delgado scored 14 points, with Kyler Moats adding 11 and junior varsity call-up Kye Stevens chipping in 10.
On Saturday, Soap Lake got an event better game out of the senior Delgado, who led all scorers with 22 points. But it wasn't enough to overcome the Colton Wildcats, who walked away with a 66-58 victory.
Moats added 17 points for the Eagles, who trailed 32-27 at halftime.
Soap Lake travels to Oroville for a league contest on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
