WENATCHEE - The Moses Lake Chiefs boys swimming team opened its Columbia Basin League schedule last Thursday with a 95-91 loss to the Wenatchee Panthers.
Wenatchee, the defending CBL 4A champions, managed to scratch out the victory despite several solid performances from the Chiefs.
Moses Lake's winners included Marshall Goodrich in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 9.73 seconds) and 500-yard freestyle (5:06.22), Jeremy Grant in the 50-yard freestyle (23.40 seconds) and Eric Butterfield in the 100-yard freestyle (51.54).
The Chiefs also won a pair of relay events. The 200-yard freestyle foursome of Butterfield, Nicholas Kardong, Goodrich and Grant held off Wenatchee's second-place team by just over a second, winning in 1:34.29. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the same team was over 5 seconds better than their nearest competitor, winning in 3:27.66.
Second-place efforts for the Chiefs included Austin Massart in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.62), Grant in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.82), Butterfield in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.70) and Dylan Grigg in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.40).
In the dive competition, Moses Lake's Bobby Jackson, Chad Borg and Jay Bowser finished 1-2-3, earning the Chiefs 12 team points.
The Chiefs hosted a district diving meet the following day. Randy Peltier of Davis took the top spot with 343.40 points, but the Chiefs swept the next three positions. Jackson was second at 276.60, Borg was third at 272.90 and Bowser was fourth at 259.80.
The Chiefs host the Davis Pirates today at the Moses Lake High School pool, a 2:30 p.m. start.

MOSES LAKE - Monday's makeup date with the visiting Davis Pirates went just about as smoothly as possible for the Moses Lake Chiefs bowling team.
The Chiefs moved to 12-0 in Central Washington League action, easily defeating the Pirates behind senior Sandy Smith's two-game scratch series total of 398.
Smith bowled a 216 as Moses Lake crushed Davis 894-738 to open the scratch series.
"The first game they bowled good," Chiefs head coach Billy Brice said. "Very consistent - I'll take 894 any day."
Michelle Reynolds finished at 191, followed by Shanice Brice (171), Virginia Valdez (170) and Amanda Strezlczyk (146).
Moses Lake wasn't quite as consistent in game two, finishing at 805. Smith led the way at 182, followed by Brice at 170. Valdez and Reynolds each rolled a 153, and sophomore Mariah Palmer - stepping in for an injured Strezlczyk - wound up at 147.
The Chiefs finished things off in style, winning their Baker series 237-146 and 156-145.
Moses Lake is at Lake Bowl again today, hosting the Ellensburg Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m.

Wilson Creek 84, Easton 10
WILSON CREEK - The Lady Devils obliterated the visiting Jaguars last Friday in a North Central League contest, outscoring them 29-0 in the first quarter.
Easton never scored more than four points in any period, and Wilson Creek had four players finish in double figures. Holly Wilson had a game-high 22 points, with Ksenja Fredere scoring 19, Kelsey Campbell adding 18 and Tiffany Friend chipping in 12.
On Saturday, the Lady Devils lost a 53-26 non-league decision at Touchet. Wilson led the team with seven points, Fredere scored six and Friend added five.
Wilson Creek plays at Lake Roosevelt on Wednesday, a 6 p.m. start.
