Zamarron zaps Toppenish, Quincy finds win column

QUINCY - Tashia Zamarron blasted the Toppenish Wildcats on Saturday night, scoring a game-high 30 points as the Lady Jackrabbits won their first game of the year, 64-54.

Quincy improved to 1-4 overall, 1-2 in Central Washington Athletic Conference action. A 23-13 surge in the second quarter helped the Lady Jacks erase an early deficit and overcome the 14 points apiece from Wildcats A.J. Yarlott and Ximena Prieto.

Quincy's Dayanna Lopez also had a key effort, scoring 16 points. The Jacks took a 32-26 lead into the half and closed things out well, winning the fourth period 17-14.

The Jacks go to Ephrata on Friday for a 6 p.m. start.

Moses Lake 71, West Valley 49

MOSES LAKE - The second-ranked Chiefs kept their record unblemished, racing out to a 42-17 halftime lead and never looking back.

Moses Lake (5-0) got its usual strong performances from Carly Noyes (game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds), Kelly Sutherland (14 points), Jordan Loera (12 points) and Ann Noyes (12 points). Hailey Curtis had 15 for the Rams, with Taylor Fannin adding 14 points, five boards and three assists.

West Valley led 9-0 before the Chiefs awoke - and woke quickly. Moses Lake scored 23 of next 26 points, then held the Rams to five points in the second period.

The Chiefs travel to Wenatchee on Tuesday, facing the Panthers at 7:30 p.m.

Lind-Ritzville 68, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 39

LIND - The Lady Broncos held the Warriors to 10 second-half points, breaking free from a close game to win in a Bi-County League romp.

Lind-Ritzville (5-1 overall, 3-1 Bi-County) was clinging to a 35-29 lead at halftime before using a 19-3 spurt in the third period and a 14-7 run in the fourth.

Bronco senior Katlin Fowles led three Lind-Ritzville players in double figures with 16 points. Kelsey Arlt had 14 and Devon Killian added 12. ACH got 12 points from freshman Sarah Gloyn and eight from Alyssa Bodeau.

Lind-Ritzville goes to Davenport on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. ACH (1-2, 1-2) goes to Northwest Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Warden 45, Kittitas 42

WARDEN - The Lady Cougars broke into the win column thanks to 10 points from Kelsey Garner and eight points, nine rebounds and four assists from Cassandra Kisler.

Warden led 20-18 at halftime and held on at the end. The Koyotes, who got 12 points from Natalie Gibb and 10 from Jordan Paul, missed a 3-pointer at the final horn.

Amanda Martinez added nine points for Warden, which takes to the court again on Tuesday at Columbia-Burbank. Tip time is 6 p.m.

Granger 62, Royal 29

GRANGER - The Spartans overwhelmed the visiting Knights in a non-conference matchup, getting 18 ponits from Sam Zapien and 16 from Italia Mengarelli.

Royal was held to single digits in the first three quarters and the Knights' leading scorer, Leslie Brown, managed only six. Zapien added 11 rebounds and Mengarelli had three steals for Granger.

The Lady Knights host Kittitas in their final non-conference tune-up, a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.

Selah 67, Ephrata 39

SELAH - The Vikings blew out the visiting Tigers in a CWAC contest, going up 36-12 at halftime and getting double-digit scoring from three players.

Justine Hintz had 10 points for Ephrata and Jamie Bohnet added eight, but the Tigers weren't close to matching the output of Selah's big three.

Sasha Valdez scored 27 points, Emily Harris had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Rochelle Burke had 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Ephrata hosts CWAC rival Quincy on Friday at 6 p.m.

Ellensburg 65, Othello 59

ELLENSBURG - The Lady Huskies finished the game on a 26-15 run, but it wasn't enough to overcome a huge deficit in their CWAC game with the undefeated Bulldogs.

Ellensburg got 16 points from Kayla Standish and 11 from Tana Ferrell to remain in first place in the conference at 3-0. Othello's Justine Villarreal had 16 points and Courtney Kirkwood added 13.

Ellensburg led 24-10 after one quarter and 41-17 at halftime before Othello's slumbering offense awoke to the tune of 42 second-half points.

The Huskies look to rebound on Thursday when they play host to the Selah Vikings at 6 p.m.

Friday

Moses Lake 82, Hanford 42

HANFORD - The Chiefs turned things into an immediate rout, opening with a 16-0 lead they extended to 28-5 after one period.

Freshman point guard Jordan Loera was nearly unstoppable, scoring 22 points on 10 of 17 from the floor and adding 10 assists and seven rebounds. Carly Noyes, the defending league MVP, was just as dominant inside, notching a game-high 26 points and missing just two of her 14 field goals. Noyes also had 10 rebounds.

Moses Lake hit 14 of its first 18 shots and finished the night at 60 percent. The Chiefs limited Hanford's top scorer, Brittany Quick, to nine points. Meanwhile, they also got big contributions from Kelly Sutherland (11 points, five assists) and Ann Noyes (13 points, five rebounds, six assists).

Othello 61, Grandview 52

OTHELLO - The Lady Huskies broke into the CWAC win column largely thanks to a 20-10 third-quarter spurt.

Justine Villarreal scored 18 points and had five steals to pace Othello. Courtney Kirkwood added 13 points and Christine Kirkwood had 11 points and eight rebounds. That helped offset a huge night from Grandview's Kinzi Poteet, who had 22 points and five steals.

Othello went up 14-8 after one period and 24-21 at halftime before pulling away in the third period.

Royal 58, Highland 53 (OT)

ROYAL CITY - The Lady Knights looked as if they'd blow things open early on, compiling an 18-7 lead after one period, but it wasn't that easy against the visiting Scots.

Royal got contributions throughout its lineup to win the non-league contest. Tawnee Gonzales and Leslie Brown tied for the team lead with 12 points, and Gonzales added seven rebounds. Danni Callahan had eight points, Karina Morales scored eight and grabbed eight boards, and Kelcy Jansen chipped in six points and four assists.

Highland's Lindsey Adams led all scorers with 17 points, but the Knights held the Scots to 19 of 60 shooting from the field.

Soap Lake 57, Mansfield 40

SOAP LAKE - Ariel Wernex, Tanya Babak and Chelsea Allen proved far too much for the visiting Kernels to handle in a non-league matchup.

Soap Lake's trio scored 41 points as the Eagles broke loose from a 12-12 tie and were on cruise control for the final three quarters. Wernex scored 15 points, and Babak and Allen added 13 apiece as Soap Lake improved its record to 1-4.

The Eagles try for win No. 2 on Friday, hosting the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats at 6 p.m.

Lind-Ritzville 60, Wilbur-Creston 33

CRESTON - The Lady Broncos made short work of the Wildcats, outscoring them 35-15 over the second and third periods to win their Bi-County League contest.

Katlin Fowles led all scorers with 19 points, Kelsey Arlt scored 11 for Lind-Ritzville. Laura Cain (nine points), Devon Killian (eight points) and Stephanie Steinberger (eight points) also had key contributions for the Broncos.

Wapato 55, Quincy 30

WAPATO - The Lady Jackrabbits fell into an early hole and were beaten by the Wolves' balanced scoring in a CWAC contest.

Tashia Zamarron had 12 points to lead Quincy, with Lesa Hearst adding eight. But the Wolves, who led 30-16 at halftime, got six or more points from five players. Joan Hoptowit paced Wapato with 12 points.

Liberty 50, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 33

HARTLINE - The visiting Lancers from Spangle raced out to a 28-22 halftime lead and outscored the Warriors 21-12 in the second half to easily win a Bi-County League contest.

Liberty had two players score in double figures, while no one did so for ACH. Sarah Gloyn had eight points for the Warriors, with Breanne Martin and Megan Osborne scoring six apiece.

Reardan 65, Odessa 23

ODESSA - The visiting Indians crushed the Tigers with an early 26-7 run and held Odessa to single digits in all four quarters.

Reardan won the Bi-County League contest by getting three players in double figures. Jordan Frederick led Odessa with nine points.

The Tigers try to regroup tonight when they host the Columbia-Hunters Lions at 5:30 p.m.
