Washington, Idaho, Oregon - and Florida

| December 17, 2007 8:00 PM

I am well aware I am not well traveled.

That's just the way things have worked out up until this point - when summer came around, my family decided we would much rather stay at home and read then rush off somewhere for two weeks of stress and strain in a far-off land.

For the longest time, I had only hit two states: That in which I lived, and its neighbor.

A couple years ago, I got the opportunity to add on one more for work, when a flight was offered for the business community to explore the route from Moses Lake to Portland, Ore.

And recently, I added my fourth state.

I've now been to Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Florida.

The occasion to visit my fourth state recently arose when my best friend and partner in crime from college, Tyson, became engaged to an awesomely cool lady named Kerrie, and Tyson decided it just wouldn't be a wedding without Weaver.

So I was his groomsman, and got to spend about a week in just about the most opposite point in the continental United States from where I grew up.

Amongst the highlights of the trip, in no particular order:

  • Immediately plotting identity theft when I saw the view from Tyson and Kerrie's apartment in downtown Orlando
  • Insisting Tyson pull over while driving down the airport parking garage so I could attempt to touch a palm tree
  • Purchasing Eeyore paraphernalia for my mom from the Eeyore corner of the Winnie-The-Pooh store at Disney World
  • Monumental disappointment after psyching ourselves up to take Doctor Doom's Fear Fall at Universal Studios
  • It taking 10 to 15 minutes to wait for the rides at the aforementioned Universal Studios, which Tyson claims is not always the case
  • A bewildered Tyson coming up to me at the reception as I danced and saying, "I didn't know you had moves," which was news to me, as well
  • Getting to know a whole slate of Tyson and Kerrie's family members, just about the nicest bunches of people you could ever meet
  • Feeding alligators
  • Sitting in the middle of the Utah State University girls' volleyball team on the first plane from Spokane to Salt Lake City, Utah (Airport terminals, as everyone knows, do not count in the list of states visited, otherwise I could add Utah and Georgia.)
  • Seeing the Atlantic Ocean, and picking up seashells for my dad
  • My younger brother freaking me out by telling me what time it was, where I was, when we spoke on the phone, even though I was perpetually three hours later than him because of the time zone difference
  • Drinking gallons of sweet tea
  • Tyson's new father-in-law telling me I had won over his niece when I got on my soapbox about the redeeming qualities of soap operas
  • Correctly pronouncing Chick-Fil-A, thanks to "Uncle" Curt, who works here at the newspaper with me
  • Oh yeah, and Tyson and Kerrie getting married

It was nice, if somewhat disheartening, to get back and see Washington had not collapsed without me - here I've been convinced I am integral to the state's existence - but it was a good trip, one which whetted my appetite for future travel.

I'm not entirely certain where I'll go next, but I think it's safe to say that in my lifetime I'll hit a fifth.
