Display is up through Christmas

MOSES LAKE - Discover Elementary School students are exploring the cultures of their peers with a culture wall.

Students brought in articles from their families linked to different countries. The items are on display in the school, along with a world map.

"We have these artifacts, clothing and money from all over the world, up on our wall," said teacher Peggy McNutt.

McNutt said the idea came about during a parent-teacher conference, when a parent offered to bring in a Persian rug. Now, several items are on display from students in all grade levels.

"I learned that there are different things that you can use and get in different countries," said Mikayla Jenkins, 7.

Isabel Sica, 7, said she learned from the display that each country has something special.

Student Nick Berg, 7, brought in a piece of the Berlin Wall, which his father brought back from a trip to Germany.

"My dad went to Germany, and this is a real piece of the wall right here," he said, pointing to a photo of the wall.

Students stop and look at the display on their way to recess, and they talk about the items they brought in, McNutt said.

One boy ran up to the map, asking the location of Thailand. After other students helped him find it, he told McNutt his aunt is in Thailand and he is going in March to see her.

Sara Mengist, 8, brought several items, including a dress from her birth country of Ethiopia. Mengist said she wore the dress when she was younger.

Mengist brought items from other countries where her family has friends, including Israel and Hungary.

"That was sort of a neat thing from our community," McNutt said.
