Moses Lake girls stay unbeaten with trouncing of Eastmont Wildcats

MOSES LAKE - Another stellar first-quarter effort keyed the Moses Lake girls' third straight victory to open the season, a 65-32 blowout of the Eastmont Wildcats on Friday night.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 19-3 lead after eight minutes, increased their lead to 35-11 at halftime and cruised from there. Carly Noyes led all scorers with 20 points.

Moses Lake's starting backcourt of Kelly Sutherland and Jordan Loera also performed admirably, with Sutherland scoring 13 points and Loera adding 12. Senior forward Ann Noyes was the Chiefs' fourth double-digit scorer with 10 points.

Moses Lake takes some time off and returns to action on Friday at Hanford, a 7:30 p.m. start.

Moses Lake Christian 54, Soap Lake 45

MOSES LAKE - The Lady Lions rallied from a 16-6 first-quarter deficit en route to a non-league win over the Eagles on Saturday night.

Soap Lake maintained a 34-27 lead going to the fourth quarter, but Moses Lake Christian went on a 27-11 spurt down the stretch. Lions head coach Emerson Ferguson credited his team's full-court pressure - which forced 27 turnovers - and strong bench play from Ashley Cole and Lynnsee Moberg in the win.

Esther Timofeyev had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lions. Kristina Firouzi had 12 points and Jessica Jachetta added 11. Cole scored seven in 19 minutes off the bench, while Heidi Sandberg collected six points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Soap Lake junior Chelsea Allen led all scorers with 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting, while junior Mercedes Franks added 12 points.

Moses Lake Christian plays again Friday at LaSalle, a 6 p.m. start, while Soap Lake hosts Mansfield at 6 p.m.

Entiat 54, Soap Lake 44

ENTIAT - On Friday night, the Tigers stormed to a 34-21 halftime lead and kept the Eagles at bay for a non-league win.

Soap Lake senior Tanya Babak led all scorers with 17 points in the Eagles' defeat. Michelle Marthini added 11 points and Ariel Wernex chipped in eight.

Prosser 74, Quincy 36

QUINCY - In the Central Washington Athletic Conference opener for both squads, the visiting Mustangs took control with a 21-10 first-quarter outburst.

Prosser's Jordan Brown led all scorers with 22 points as three Prosser players finished in double figures. Quincy's Tashia Zamarron had 12 points to lead the Lady Jackrabbits, with Jessica Lerma and Colleen Knodell adding eight points apiece.

Quincy tries to regroup on Friday, traveling to Wapato for a 6 p.m. date with the CWAC rival Wolves.

White Swan 54, Warden 34

WHITE SWAN - Kelsey Garner and Cassandra Kisler both had strong games for Warden's Cougars, but the White Swan Cougars were victorious in a non-league contest on Saturday.

White Swan's Dakota Arnoux led all scorers with 20 points as her team opened up a 10-2 lead after one period.

Garner led Warden with 13 points and Cassandra Kisler scored 11. Kacey Kisler and Brandi Kisler each collected six rebounds for Warden.

Zillah 57, Warden 24

WARDEN - A night earlier, the Lady Cougars were manhandled in the second half by the visiting Leopards, getting outscored 30-13 as Zillah pulled away for a non-league win.

Warden struggled offensively, shooting just 16 percent from the field (8 of 51) and just 35 percent from the free-throw line (8 of 23). Amanda Martinez had a team-high six points, Brandi Kisler had nine rebounds and Cassandra Kisler added seven boards.

Warden hosts Northeast League power Colfax on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Grandview 51, Ephrata 40

GRANDVIEW - Greyhounds star Kinzi Poteet overmatched the Lady Tigers on Friday in the CWAC opener for both squads.

Poteet led all scorers with 22 points and added eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Poteet did most of her damage at the free-throw line, hitting 14 of her 20 shots. Grandview hit 24 free throws to Ephrata's 14.

Ephrata's defense kept things close in the first half as the Tigers trailed 17-13 going to the break. BreAnne Duff had 12 points to pace Ephrata, while Mallory Lotz and Abby Smith scored eight apiece.

The Tigers host CWAC rival Ellensburg on Friday at 6 p.m.

East Valley 50, Othello 36

YAKIMA - The Lady Huskies kicked off CWAC play on Friday night with a 14-point loss to the perennial powerhouse Red Devils.

East Valley's Michaela Huck was the game's high scorer with 18 points, offsetting good efforts from Othello's Christine Kirkwood (13 points) and Courtney Kirkwood (11 points).

The Huskies return home Friday night, hosting Grandview at 6 p.m.

White Swan 47, Royal 42

WHITE SWAN - Tawnee Gonzales and Leslie Brown both scored in double figures for the Lady Knights, but a slow start hit them hard in a non-league loss to the Cougars on Friday.

"If we could've erased the first quarter and played the way we did the last three, we would've beat them," Royal head coach Maria Lefler said.

White Swan opened up a 10-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Gonzales paced Royal with 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Brown added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Karina Morales also grabbed nine boards.

The Knights hit the road again on Tuesday, a rescheduled contest against the Mabton Vikings. Game time is 6 p.m.
