YAKIMA - With an important showdown at Kennewick looming on Thursday, the Moses Lake Chiefs girls bowling team wasn't looking ahead on Tuesday.

The Chiefs ran their Central Washington League record to 7-0 on Tuesday with a sweep of the West Valley Rams. Moses Lake's first scratch series was a solid one, with Shanice Brice bowling a team-high 215, but the second game was truly indicative of the Chiefs' ability.

"The next game we caught fire and the girls bowled really good," Moses Lake head coach Billy Brice said. "To shoot 900 when you're out of town is always huge."

The Chiefs didn't just hit the 900 mark - they shattered it. Virginia Valdez finished at 238 and Michelle Reynolds at 225 as the Chiefs totaled 951, their second-highest scratch series of the year. Sandy Smith rolled a 180 and Brice was at 170.

In game one, Amanda Strezlczyk tallied 178 and Smith 173 as the Chiefs won with an 862 total.

Moses Lake also swept the two Baker series, wiinning 170-147 and 153-133.

"We have been practicing hard on some things and it looks like it's starting to pay off finally," Brice said.

The Chiefs will try to keep their undefeated start intact on Thursday when they travel to Kennewick for a 3:30 p.m. match. The Lions are 6-1 in league matches thus far.

Boys basketball

Quincy 60, Cascade-Leavenworth 52

QUINCY - A fast start fueled the Jackrabbits in their season opener on Tuesday, an eight-point victory over the former league rival Kodiaks.

"It was real up and down," Quincy head coach Wade Petersen said. "In the fourth quarter (Cascade) kind of came back and made it close."

But Quincy survived thanks to a 23-10 lead to open the game. Eric Martin scored a game-high 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Jacks. Jay Cedergreen (11 points, four assists) and Jesse Gonzales (10 points, seven rebounds) also had solid contributions for Quincy.

Cascade's Blaine Dawson led his squad with 21 points.

Petersen likes his 10-player rotation, which figures to be the key to Quincy's success in this year's Central Washington Athletic Conference horse race.

"We've got real good team chemistry and team depth," Petersen said. "We've got a lot of guys who can come in and contribute."

Quincy travels to Royal on Saturday for a makeup date. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Wilson Creek 42, Cascade Christian 26

WILSON CREEK - The Devils started the game slowly but came on strong in the second half to put away the Cougars in their season opener on Monday.

Daniel Teasfeld led Wilson Creek with 17 points, Phillip Fugit scored 10 and Jacob Treat added eight. Patrick Trepanier collected a team-high 11 rebounds.

Devils head coach Keith Jensen said his squad did a much better job in the second half of relaxing and properly running their sets.

The Devils host Lake Roosevelt's junior varsity squad on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

Wilson Creek 56, Cascade Christian 39

WILSON CREEK - The Lady Devils' season opener on Monday saw Holly Wilson just miss a double-double, recording 19 points and nine rebounds in Wilson Creek's non-league victory.

Wilson Creek hosts the Lake Roosevelt junior varsity on Wednesday, a 6 p.m. start.

Cascade 48, Quincy 30

QUINCY - Dayanna Lopez and Jaclyn Lerma scored nine points apiece for the Lady Jackrabbits, but it wasn't enough to get past the Kodiaks for a non-league win on Tuesday night.

The Jacks (0-2) begin Central Washington Athletic Conference play on Friday, hosting the Prosser Mustangs at 6 p.m.

"We're working on rebounding and taking care of the basketball," Quincy head coach Cully Donovan said. "We need to improve in both areas."

Medical Lake 39, Ephrata 30

MEDICAL LAKE - Ephrata 125-pounder Brandon Butcher began the evening with a 2-minute, 13-second pin of the Cardinals' Kyle Thomas, but Medical Lake survived an early-season battle between two perennial 2A powers.

The Tigers' five victories all came via pin. At 160, Ephrata's Ryan Croff knocked off Tim Ames with 24 seconds remaining in the second period. Robert Motzkus followed with a 171-pound pin of Zak Ellstad in 1:14. Anthony Johnson pinned Medical Lake's Chris Culnane at 4:05 of the heavyweight match. The Cardinals won four straight bouts after Butcher's opening win. Ephrata's Mitchell Friend (130), Kurt Nygard (135), Tyson Hubbard (145) and Quinton Hendrickson (152) were all defeated.

Brady Beard dropped a 3-1 decision to Zac Dunker at 189, heralded freshman Deion Ducksworth (215) fell to A.J. Guidry in a first-period pin, Seth Kulakoski lost 7-2 to Dylan Selm, and the Tigers forfeited the 112-pound match.
