Noyes' 27 points help Chiefs open with rout of Sunnyside

SUNNYSIDE - Moses Lake's girls kicked off their 2007-2008 on Friday night by walloping the Sunnyside Grizzlies 80-48 in non-league action.

Moses Lake opened the game with a 20-10 run and increased its lead to 40-17 at halftime. Carly Noyes, the reigning Columbia Basin League 4A Most Valuable Player, had a superb start to her season by notching a double-double - 27 points and 16 rebounds. Noyes was 13 of 15 from the floor and also blocked six shots.

Moses Lake's top three guards all scored in double figures. Kelly Sutherland picked up 16 points, nine assists and four steals. Heralded freshman Jordan Loera had 12 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Senior captain Lorin Montgomery had 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point range and added three steals. The Chiefs were 12 of 30 on 3-pointers as a team.

Moses Lake head coach Matt Strophy was concerned with his squad's rebounding, as the Chiefs allowed 19 offensive boards and 19 second-chance points. Sunnyside's Kayla Rollinger scored 22 points and grabbed 12 boards.

The Chiefs' defense was sharp as a whole, however, blocking 10 shots and forcing 27 turnovers. Moses Lake had 24 assists on its 32 made field goals.

Moses Lake hosts the Kamiakin Braves in a non-league matchup tonight at Chief Gym, a 7:30 p.m. start.

Moses Lake Christian 51, Prescott 30

PRESCOTT - The Lady Lions jumped out to a 31-19 halftime lead on Friday and cruised to a 21-point victory over the Tigers in their season opener.

Esther Timofeyev had a game-high 15 points for Moses Lake Christian and Chelsea Allsbrook chipped in 12 points. Timofeyev finished 7 for 11 from the field, though the Lions finished at only 30 percent as a team.

The Lions forced 35 Tiger turnovers and turned them into 25 points. Jessica Jachetta led the defensive effort with seven steals and Allsbrook added six. Moses Lake Christian also earned a 52-42 edge on the glass.

The Lady Lions play at Lind-Ritzville tonight, a 6 p.m. non-league start.

Royal 51, Quincy 43

ROYAL CITY - The Lady Knights used a 14-7 fourth-quarter run to pull away from the Lady Jackrabbits in a non-league contest last Thursday.

Tawnee Gonzales led all scorers with 19 points to pace Royal, while Dayanna Lopez led Quincy with 17 points.

Royal's Leslie Brown had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and teammate Danni Callahan had four points, five assists and four steals.

Both teams return to the court tonight at 6 p.m., with Royal hosting the Mabton Vikings and Quincy hosting the Cascade-Leavenworth Kodiaks.

Cashmere 64, Ephrata 45

CASHMERE - Freshman Abby Smith tied for the game high with 16 points, but the Tigers couldn't overcome three Cashmere players in double figures during a non-league loss on Saturday.

Stacie Clay hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and five assists to lead Cashmere. Katelyn Thompson had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Jacqueline Cloakey added 14 points for the Bulldogs.

Ephrata tries to regroup Friday in its Central Washington Athletic Conference debut, a 6 p.m. start at Grandview.

Pateros 55, Soap Lake 42

SOAP LAKE - With the game tied at 41 with four minutes to go, the visiting Nannies went on a 14-1 run and pulled away for a non-league win over the Eagles.

Michelle Marthini scored 15 points to lead Soap Lake. Pateros' Clara Hull had eight points in her team's late-game surge and finished the night with 29 points.

Soap Lake plays again tonight, hosting the Odessa Tigers in a 6 p.m. non-league contest.
