Motorcycle collision leaves one dead

Rider suffered extensive injuries

SCHWANA — An unsafe pass resulted in a fatality on state Route 243 Thursday afternoon near Schwana in Grant County.

Scott B. Hembree, 44, Buckley, was traveling southbound on SR 243 on a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle, the Washington State Patrol reported. Hembree allegedly attempted an unsafe pass around a 1999 Freightliner hauling two trailers.

During the pass, Hembree collided with an oncoming 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling in the northbound lane.

The motorcycle came to rest underneath one of the trailers a half mile away from the accident scene, the state patrol reported.

Hembree was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the patrol he suffered a severe leg injury and severe internal injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Victor J. Guizar, 33, Basin City, was not injured.

Passengers Alma Guizar, 33, Basin City, and a 15-year-old female and a 1-year-old male were not injured.

The driver of the Freightliner, Arturo A. Silva, 48, Yakima, was not injured.

The motorcycle was totaled.

The Chevrolet Tahoe sustained $1,000 in damages.

The Freightliner sustained $1,000 in damages.

The roadway was blocked for nearly two hours while law enforcement evaluated the scene.
