Earl Horning
Earl Vernon Horning, 79, of Othello, died Aug. 5, 2007, at his home.
Earl was born on Nov. 28, 1927, In Moscow, Idaho. To Fred O. and Millie (Bumgarner) Horning. Earl was attending the University of Idaho in agriculture when the Korean War called him to service where he served as a field medic. Earl received an extensive injury and was sent home to recover. After he was discharged Earl returned to the University of Idaho and then transferred to Washington State College (University) where he graduated with a Master of Science degree in agriculture. He moved to Ephrata as part of the W.S.C. Extension Agency. He worked in Ephrata for four years. He moved to Prosser where he worked with the Prosser Research facility in some of the first work with fruit tree and grape vine grafting. After six years in Prosser Earl moved to Othello again with the extension agency. He bought land on Lucy Rd. and farmed as long as his health allowed.
Earl was a member of the Farm Bureau Association, the noxious weed board, Adams County Fair Board, and the WSU Alumni Association. He had a passion for getting rid of weeds and worked many hours on trying to find new and better ways to eliminate weeds from every farm and garden. He enjoyed roses and had a large collection at his house.
Earl is survived by his three sisters, Helen Alderman of Pelahatchie, Miss., Irene Smith of Olympia and Ethel Cheatum of Roy, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Glen Horning.
Memorial services will be held at Stevens Funeral Chapel in Othello on Friday Aug. 17, at 10 a.m.
