Pirates, princesses shine during library program

MOSES LAKE — The children on hand at the Moses Lake Library had a full itinerary Tuesday morning:

Listen to stories.

Twinkle like fairy princesses.

Walk the plank.

Maybe get a new bicycle.

Moses Lake Masonic Lodge 174 Master Fritz Kliphardt and Secretary Marion Rice held a drawing for four bicycles during the library's All that Glitters program, which included arts and crafts and four stories, two about pirates and two about magical fairies.

Children also "walked the plank" by walking across several boards librarians Barbara Gallaway and Roxanne Southwood set down.

Dylan Morrison, Joshua Baldwin, Megan Nicholle and Spencer Bowen's names were all drawn as recipients of bicycles by Kliphardt, Gallaway and Southwood while Rice made note of the names.

A fifth bicycle is still in reserve until the library's summer reading program ends Sept. 1.

It was the third year the Lodge had donated the bicycles, Rice said.

A similar program in Brewster came up during a district meeting, he explained, and so Rice brought it up to the Moses Lake lodge when he served as master.

"One of our big things is education," Rice said.

The Lodge took the bicycles to the library's existing summer reading program, which allows the organization a larger base of children to attempt to reach, Rice said.

To be eligible to receive the bicycles, participating children had to read for a minimum of 10 hours.
