Chiefs move into second with one match to play

PASCO — Led by 1-over-par rounds from Cameron Whittle and Zac McDougall Monday, the Moses Lake Chiefs moved into a tie for second place in the Columbia Basin League golf standings with one match left on the league schedule.

The Moses Lake pair shared fourth place in the match, finishing seven shots back of the Pasco Bulldogs' Brian Barton.

The Chiefs finished their afternoon at Sun Willows Golf Course in second place, shooting a 299 to finish seven strokes behind the CBL frontrunning Pasco Bulldogs.

"I thought they played well," said Moses Lake coach JR Cox. "They took advantage of some good weather."

With their strong play at Sun Willows, Moses Lake has put themselves in position to finish as high as second in the final CBL standings. While the Chiefs have a mathematical chance of catching Pasco and winning the league title, it would take a monumental meltdown by a Bulldog team that has won three straight league matches.

While the Chiefs are currently tied for second place with Walla Walla and Wenatchee, they may have the inside track on the league's runner-up spot. They host the fifth and final league match on May 7 at Moses Lake Golf Club.

Whittle and McDougall, who each fired 73s lead Moses Lake past the Walla Walla Blue Devils' 301 and the Wenatchee Panthers' 307, were not the only Chiefs' golfers to play well Monday.

Rick Gleed narrowly missed the top 10, shooting a 76 to tie for 11th place. Mike Holmes was one shot behind with a 77, good enough to earn him a share of 13th place.

Other Moses Lake scores included an 83 by Billy Brice and an 84 by Justin Walker.
