Chiefs' scoring surge downs Walla Walla

Four goals in six minutes carries Moses Lake to win

WALLA WALLA — The Moses Lake Chiefs prevailed in a goal-scoring showcase with the Walla Walla Blue Devils, defeating their Columbia Basin League foes 5-4 in a soccer match Tuesday.

The Blue Devils struck first in Tuesday's match, taking a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest. Moses Lake tied the game at one just seven minutes later on an Isaac Bergeson header set up by a Seth Bruneel corner kick.

Walla Walla regained the lead in the 25th minute, but Moses Lake caught fire to the tune of four goals in more than six minutes of match time.

Richie Ramirez lit the fuse on the Chiefs' offense, converting a Bruneel pass into a goal in the 37th minute. Ramirez gave the Chiefs their first lead of the match just two minutes later, this goal coming off a Mick Aney assist.

After the first 40 minutes of play and the half-time break, the Moses Lake offense returned to the field and quickly picked up where it left off.

Ramirez scored his third his third goal of the game just 20 seconds into the second half to put Moses Lake up 4-2. In the 43rd minute, Dominic Anzelini gave Moses Lake a 5-2 lead when he drove a rebound of a Chiefs' shot into the net for a goal.

"It wasn't very pretty, defensively today," said Moses Lake coach Bill Bertram. "But, we have enough scoring power to pull off a win."

Walla Walla scored in the 45th and 60th minutes to make the game closer, but the Chiefs were able to hold on for the win.

With the win, Moses Lake now sits in second place in the CBL standings.

Saturday, the Chiefs host first-place Pasco at Lions' Field in a showdown of CBL playoff contenders. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
