Woman reportedly on drugs

SOAP LAKE — A 19-year-old Soap Lake woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly assaulting her month-old baby while hallucinating on drugs, leaving the infant with serious injuries.

Soap Lake Police Chief Jim Dorris said the woman, identified as Kyla Ryan (Overall) Kormaniski, was allegedly high on methamphetamine when she reportedly kicked and stomped her infant son, who was only 28 days old.

The mother also reportedly told police she ingested Topamax, an anti-seizure medicine also prescribed to treat migraine headaches.

The boy, Dorris said, suffered a broken rib and bruised liver and was taken to Columbia Basin Hospital. The child was later transported to Central Washington Hospital, in Wenatchee, the chief said.

"The child is going to be OK," he said.

Kormaniski, who was staying at Lake Motel in the 300 block of South Daisy Street when the alleged attack occurred, was arrested and booked into Grant County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault of a child.

Kormaniski and the boy's father, according to her statements to police, were using meth prior to the alleged assault. The father left the hotel to go to John's Foods, a couple blocks away.

Neighbors said they saw the mother allegedly kick the boy out a doorway, stomp on him three times, before one witness intervened, preventing the attack from continuing. The mother then ran off to tell the father, who was still at the store.

"She told the father she thought the baby was dead," Dorris said.

The father ran back to the motel, grabbed the child and ran to a relative's home. The relative took the child to the hospital.

Kormaniski, who has some previous criminal history with Soap Lake Police, was located later at a friend's residence on Second Avenue S.E., where Soap Lake Police apprehended her.

The police investigation is ongoing, as Dorris is continuing to interview other parties possibly involved in the incident.

Dorris anticipates the child being placed in the custody of state Child Protective Services.

Kormaniski made an initial appearance in Grant County Superior Court Monday, charged with second-degree assault. She's being held on $100,000 bail.
