Lady Jacks caught off guard by Lady Huskies attack

QUINCY - Othello took advantage of Quincy's youth Thursday to win in three games on the road.

In game one, the Lady Jacks kept the game close and enjoyed a lead early on but could not maintain it.

Othello tied the game at 13 on the serving of Daniella Villegas who was 12-for-13 serving with seven aces on the night.

"Our serve-receive won us the game tonight," said Othello head coach Steve Parris. "Good passing makes everything else work."

Villegas gave her team a 4-point lead before Quincy's Allison Schaapman was able to earn a kill for a sideout.

The Lady Huskies allowed just one point before earning a sideout of their own to regain the serve and earn another four points with serving from Connie Garza.

Kimi Goto stopped the scoring run with a kill and gave Lesa Hearst who was 10-for-10 serving on the night the chance to serve for the Lady Jacks. Hearst earned two points for Quincy before the team sided out.

Othello closed out the game with a block to win 25-20.

"I made some adjustments yesterday," said Quincy head coach Jeanne Brindle. "I've got two freshman starting for me. Rachel Tobin did a great job in the middle for us."

In game two both teams traded points until Othello put together a small scoring run to pull ahead 7-5. The 2-point edge was all the opening the Lady Huskies needed to pull away from Quincy.

The Lady Huskies stifled Quincy's attempts to get back into the game, tipping and blocking well enough to earn a 25-13 victory.

Othello wasted no time closing in on the Lady Jacks in game three, going on a 7-point scoring run on serving from Priscilla Cantu that included two aces.

Hearst helped Quincy make up some scoring ground earning two aces of her own before giving up serve with the score standing at 10-6.

The Lady Huskies continued to dominate the game and won the match serving six unanswered points for a 25-12 final score.

"We used a lot of off-speed stuff on Quincy," said Parris. "They play a deep defense and we were able to take advantage of that."

For Quincy, Lauren Huxtable was 9-for-9 serving with two kills; Taylor Kunkel had two kills; and Manda Brindle had four assists. For Othello, Cantu was 8-for-8 serving; Ashley Walker was 9-for-10 serving with eight digs and 14 kills; Justine Villarreal had nine assists; Kayla Dickson eight assists; and Allison Walker was 9-for-10 serving with seven kills.
