Moses Lake ice rink on time

MOSES LAKE — The ice rink at the Larson Recreation Center in Moses Lake is on time for completion in early December, just in time for skating season.

"We're currently working to get the foundation poured for the ice rink cover," Assistant City Engineer Shawn O'Brien said.

The foundation consists of underground reinforced pads that will stabilize the collums holding the roof cover above ground.

The roof cover will be installed the week of Oct. 6 and when finished, will be 125 feet wide, 200 feet long and standing 25 feet in the air. It is an open wall structure.

"The goal is to maintain the outdoor experience of skating," O'Brien said.

The purpose of the cover is to keep the sun, rain and snow off the ice, he said. In the summer it will provide shade for inline skating and inline hockey.

"The possibilities for the rink are endless," he said.

They are also pouring the concrete for the curb this week for the new parking lot located east of the rink, he said. The lot will have a 32 car capacity.

Next week, the foundation for the zamboni storage unit will be poured. It measures 30 feet by 40 feet. The zamboni is a machine used to smooth out the ice.

The new rink will be more than double the size of the old one. The original rink was 7,000 square-feet. The new rink will be nearly 17,000 square-feet of surface area. It is the size of a full-size hockey rink.

O'Brien said he has been working on the project since July 17.
