Moses Lake Christian School knocks off Sunnyside

MOSES LAKE — John Townsend came out of the halftime break with a spark, scoring two goals for the Lions in their 6-1 defeat of Sunnyside Christian Tuesday.

Townsend's first goal came early in the second half, after a defensive flurry in the box by Sunnyside. Townsend shot squarely to the net but looked to have been unsuccessful when the Sunnyside keeper got a hand on it. A hand just was not enough, as Townsend's kick skittered into the net giving Moses Lake their first and final lead of the game.

"John did some things we needed him to do," said Moses Lake head coach Scott McCornack. "I was encouraged by his play today."

Moments after Townsend scored, Brendan McCornack deflected a goal kick from Sunnyside and took it in for his second goal of the day putting the Lions up 3-1.

Sunnyside had little time to recover from the shot, as the barrage of goal scoring by Moses Lake had yet to come to an end.

One of the Lions' team captains, Jesse Bassett, took a shot on goal that was deflected by the Sunnyside keeper and found its way to the boot of Townsend, who found the back of the net for his second goal of the day.

As the Sunnyside keeper sat in goal in disgust the Lions gathered, gaining possession and taking the ball downfield yet again. Brendan McCornack again found the net to complete a hat trick for the day before going out of the game.

The final goal of the game was scored by Levi Godfrey who took advantage of another deflected shot by the Sunnyside keeper.

"For us, we like to go out and immediately take control. We didn't do that today and we got punished for it," said Scott McCornack. "At the half I said that we were going to have to get control and once that happened everyone saw that it paid off. After our second goal in the second half, their game dropped off dramatically."

The Lions had several opportunities at the net, taking 12 shots on goal during the course of the game.

Moses Lake's first score came off the boot of Brendan McCornack from Bassett in answer to a goal scored in the first minutes by Sunnyside.

"This is a disciplined, mature group. They showed a lot of character today," said Scott McCornack. "I had some tough criticism for them at the half but they didn't get discouraged, they just changed how they played and did what they needed to do."
