Othello barrage sinks Quincy
QUINCY — Despite a concentrated effort to pressure Othello's top scorers and a solid effort from goalkeeper Julie Santos, Quincy was defeated by visiting Othello 5-0 in a CWAC soccer match Tuesday.
Othello held the ball in the Quincy half of the field for much of the game and frequently created dangerous scoring opportunities.
One early opportunity for Othello was converted into a 1-0 lead when Rachel Mohs took a pass from Chantel Guzman and fired it into the back of the net less than four minutes into the game.
Quincy nearly responded with a goal of their own in the eighth minute when a steal near midfield was converted into a breakaway opportunity. Othello goalkeeper Kelsey Peterson came out from the net to challenge the play, forcing a shot that flew just over the crossbar.
It would be one of the few scoring opportunities Quincy had on the night, as Othello used their short passing game to control possession and put pressure on the Quincy defense.
"We've been working on our passing game," said Othello coach Sarah Vasquez. "I saw that tonight."
Through most of the remainder of the first half, Othello fired shot after shot at the Quincy goal, with balls either narrowly missing the net or landing in the hands of Quincy's Santos.
"She seemed to be in the right place every time," said Vasquez of the Quincy goalkeeper. "You've got to give her some credit."
Othello would finally break through during stoppage time in the first half, when Mohs would score the second of her three goals on the night. The shot from the right side near the 18-yard line was assisted by Alexis Montemayor.
The Lady Huskies would score twice more in the early stages of the second half. The first goal was an arching shot over the outstretched arms of Santos that completed the hat-trick for Mohs at the 34:56 mark.
Five minutes later, Othello's Courtney Kirkwood was brought down hard inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick she converted for a 4-0 Lady Husky lead.
Othello would add a goal in the game's final minutes to make the score 5-0. On the play, Audrey Lotz scored with an assist from Marisa Juarez.
With the playoffs fast approaching and a big rematch with Selah a possibility, Vasquez sees one primary area where the Lady Huskies need to improve.
"Just getting healthy," remarked Vasquez, whose team has several players banged up and feeling the effects of the long season.
