Stand out defensive tackle, tight end earns a full ride

MOSES LAKE — BJ Guerra was breathless for a moment Sunday night.

Washington State University head coach Bill Doba called Guerra per the rules governing recruitment and asked the Moses Lake High School senior defensive tackle and tight end if he would like to play for the Cougars on a full-ride scholarship.

"I didn't know what to say at first," said Guerra. "It took my breath away."

Guerra has been actively recruited by WSU since his sophomore year.

Last spring, Guerra showed his stuff by being invited to try out for the Army All-American team. The try out was another pat on the back for a football player that is bringing his team to a different level on the field.

With the help of Guerra and a strong senior core, Moses Lake has gotten off to a 3-2 start and has included a trip to the Emerald City Kickoff Classic and an upset win over Eisenhower on the road last week.

As for WSU, Guerra expressed excitement at the opportunity to play football in Pullman.

"It feels awesome. It feels great," Guerra said.

The Cougar program is one that Guerra says he has always liked but his mind is not just on football.

"Academically, they really help you out," said Guerra.

The combination of good help academically and a good football program was more than Guerra could resist. After Doba asked him if he would like to be a Coug, Guerra gave the only answer he could.

"I said I'd love to," Guerra said.

Guerra will sign a letter of intent in February to make the recruitment official. Coach Doba is unable to comment on the recruitment until that time.
