Jacks defense overmatched by Bulldogs

QUINCY — The Jacks got off to a quick start against Ellensburg but could not score again in Friday night's 47-7 heartbreaker.

On the first drive of the night, Quincy was able to take their one and only lead.

The Jacks, looking at third and short, settled in at the line of scrimmage when flags flew signaling an off sides penalty to give Quincy a first and goal situation.

Quincy took advantage, handing the ball to Zac Bishop who scampered in for the 3-yard touchdown. Oscar Sorto finished off the touchdown with an extra point for the Jacks.

After the touchdown, the Jacks' defense shut Ellensburg down.

Nick Melburn penetrated the Bulldogs' offensive line for a quarterback sack. Two plays later the Quincy defense broke up a pass play to make it fourth and long for Ellensburg and forced the Bulldogs to punt.

Quincy began the ensuing possession on their own 21-yard line and quickly moved the ball 11 yards upfield with a carry by Colby Melburn.

The Jacks kept the ball on the ground with quarterback Nick Melburn running for a 5-yard gain on the option. Nick Melburn's carry was followed by another 5-yard run, this one from Bishop.

Trying to switch it up, Quincy went to the air but Nick Melburn had the pass tipped at the line of scrimmage and on the next play, A.J. Gardner carried the ball for a 1-yard gain.

With Quincy facing third and nine, Ellensburg was flagged for pass interference infraction to give the Jacks an automatic first down on the Bulldogs' 43-yard line.

The Jacks continued to make their way downfield on foot with carries from Bishop and Nick and Colby Melburn.

On first and 10 at the Bulldogs' 30, Bishop earned a 4-yard gain after defensive lineman Fernando Ruiz was carried off the field for what appeared to be a knee injury.

Bishop carried the ball again on the ensuing play, picking up 17 yards and first down after being tackled at the Ellensburg 9-yard line.

Quincy was back in first and goal territory, earning a yard on a carry by Colby Melburn. On the next play, Nick Melburn ran a quarterback keeper with a quick count that earned the Jacks another yard.

Colby Melburn scampered into the endzone on third and seven but had his touchdown waved off after a holding penalty was called against Quincy.

After the 10-yard penalty was enforced, Nick Melburn connected with Bishop 15 yards shy of the endzone before the first quarter ended.

The Jacks opened the second quarter trying to convert a fourth and six into a first down or touchdown but could not do either and Ellensburg took over on downs at their own 15-yard line.

On Ellensburg's ensuing drive, the Bulldogs marched 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Jacks kept the game close, allowing only two touchdowns in the first half and going into the locker room down 13-7.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a quick touchdown to move ahead 19-7 and never looked back.

Late in the game Nick Melburn went down after a kickoff return and was taken to the sidelines.
