MOSES LAKE — As usual the wrestling team is shut up in the humid room they call their own preparing for tonight's jamboree.

The team, circled around their captains, finish out practice with a rotation of sit-ups, push-ups, squats and sprints.

"We've got a good group of kids," said Moses Lake head coach Jamie Wise.

That group of kids includes a core of juniors and seniors that Wise expects big things from this season. Including a few he hopes to see continue to progress and head to state.

"Without naming names, there are eight kids I think are going to have a great year and the other six are going to come along — they have a way to go but they'll be fine," Wise said.

Wise is also looking for his team to progress at the same rate as last year's squad.

"We have to make sure we avoid injury and keep progress," said Wise. "If those eight wrestlers take care of the little things, they'll place or move up in placing at state."

A few members of the team were part of the football team in the fall sports season and are recovering from the aches and pains of the season but all the wrestlers are prepared and ready for tonight's jamboree.

In this first competitive trip to the mats captains John Fackrell, Brett Frederickson, Jordan Hill, Gabe Guzman and Matt Palmer will try to lead their teammates against Wenatchee, Royal and Ephrata.

The first round matches will be a random draw with winners wrestling winners and losers wrestling losers in the second round.

"It's a chance for us to get the kinks out before the season really starts," said Wise. "Some of those teams have tough kids."

Moses Lake's first regular season meet begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 when the Chiefs host Sunnyside and West Valley.
