Leadership by committee
MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs are stacked with seniors and hope to use that to their advantage on the court.
"We have plenty of leadership experience," said Moses Lake head coach Brant Mayo. "It's sort of been leadership by committee."
Despite the number of seniors and the amount of leadership the team has on the whole, Quinn Baker, Tyson Garcia and Josh Loera have been named captains for the season.
Thus far the team's biggest challenge has been coming back from football season.
"Ten of my 12 players played football this year, so we're a little banged up," said Mayo.
Moses Lake is working on polishing its game and is using Tuesday's jamboree sweep as a good first step according to Mayo.
"We're a work in progress," Mayo said. "The things that went wrong last night (Tuesday) are things that can be tightened up in practice."
Mayo believes this team will compete for a top spot in league and says the latest incarnation of the Chiefs have the pieces for success.
As far as goals for this season go, the team has set some lofty goals but goals that Mayo says are attainable.
"The kids set some high goals for themselves. They want to win league and place at state," said Mayo. "I think that's attainable. We don't set goals we can't reach."
The team will take a step toward achieving those goals during their home opener Saturday when they will tip off against Kennewick at 7:30 p.m.
