MOSES LAKE — Matt Strophy's team is beginning the season ranked number eight in the state.

The team swept their jamboree competition Tuesday, defeating the Lady Cougars of Warden and the Lady Jacks of Quincy with little trouble. The team combined for 46 points in two 10-minute games with Ann and Carly Noyes earning 10 points each and Marielle McKean posting six points.

This season Strophy is trying to emphasize a consistent level of play from his team and hoping to instill discipline in taking care of the ball.

"We have a lot of keys to success this season but the two big ones are consistency and eliminating turnovers," Strophy said. "We need to maintain a consistent level of basketball in every game."

The Chiefs return their starting five this season. According to Strophy all five of those players know their roles, as do players six through 10, and as long as each person fulfills their role, the team will be successful.

"Everyone is ready to execute their roles," Strophy said. "Nobody really needs to step up, whether it's players one through five or six through 10, they all have a dedicated role."

This year's team captains are McKean and Brin Bergeson.

"They are phenomenal leaders and know what's expected of them," Strophy said. "The maturity level and leadership are there with everyone."

Strophy, McKean and Bergeson attended a leadership workshop over the summer to further define their respective roles.

"They're (McKean and Bergeson) getting better at being vocal in practice," Strophy said. "It's hard to speak up to your teammates in practice but they're doing it."

Moses Lake plays their home opener against Sunnyside with a 7:30 p.m. tip off Friday at Moses Lake High School.

"The band will be there and it was nice to see 'the tribe' out tonight for the second game," Strophy said. "The girls deserve to have people come out for the games, to get some support."
