Several thousand dollars in damages, some activities may be canceled next school year

MOSES LAKE — The Grant County Sheriff's Office is investigating vandalism at Larson Heights Elementary that occurred around 2 a.m. Friday.

A deputy patrolling the area noticed the school's big toy playground equipment was on fire and proceeded to contact the fire department.

Initial reports estimate between $7,000 and $8,000 worth of damage was done.

As of Monday afternoon GCSO had no leads in the case.

Chief Deputy John Turley said while there are no leads, the sheriff's office is investigating an incident on May 10 when six boys were reported chasing a group of girls on the Larson Heights playground. The boys were dressed in gang clothing and claiming affiliation with the gang Poco Locos.

It is unknown if that incident is related to the May 12 vandalism.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s).

Parent Teacher Student Organization member Steven Crapson said the organization has put forth $5,000 from PTSO funds to cover some of the cost to repair the big toy.

Costs beyond the $5,000 will be covered by the school's insurance.

Crapson expects fund-raisers will be organized in the coming weeks and months to offset remaining damage costs.

"Usually we build a revenue a year ahead for money for activities the following year," Crapson said of the PTSO.

Those activities include special field trips to Seattle's Pacific Science Center or after school events.

Now the PTSO will have to decide whether or not money already raised will go toward fixing the school's big toy or planning future activities for students.

Crapson added the PTSO has already had two fund-raisers this year and may have to consider canceling some activities for next school year to save money.

A meeting is scheduled for Thursday to outline potential fund-raising activities. For information on the meeting call a PTSO representative at the school at (509) 766-2655.
